Piccadilly Gardens has gone from "mud baths to Wimbledon" thanks to the installation of a lush new turf. The grass at the famous garden has now been replaced after the Christmas markets and other events left it looking like muddied and looking worse for wear.

Last year pictures of the city centre garden showed the area trodden and sparse after a number of events including the EURO cup fan zone, Christmas market stalls and a New Year's Eve countdown event. Following complaints, the council announced plans to returf the garden 'as soon as possible'.

The work has since been completed with pictures taken by the MEN showing members of the public already taking full advantage new grass by lounging in the garden as the fencing that was around the grass has been removed.

Councillor and city centre spokesperson Pat Karney likened the new grass to that of Wimbledon courts and told the Manchester Evening News that there will no longer be any structures built on the grass after the damaged caused.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, councillor Karney said: "It's the best I've ever seen it! We've gone from mud baths to Wimbledon."

"Hopefully if we have a lovely sunny summer everyone will be able to enjoy the gardens. Piccadilly Gardens transforms when we have sunny weather. Now people have a real carpet of high quality grass to sit on. "
