Grass cutting is a big operation in East Riding of Yorkshire and the Council has recently replaced half its fleet of mowers with 16 Hayter LT324 triple turf mowers.

The total area is 1000 square miles and the council looks after 1070 hectares of highway verges and 133 school grounds as well as parks and open spaces, ornamental lawns, playing fields and cemeteries.

Around 80 full time staff and as many as 50 seasonal staff work from six operational depots. Between April and October the work continues for seven days a week with the operators working four days on and four days off.

The council is extremely cost conscious with a cost per hectare managed of £3160 against the national average of £5225. "The LT324 is ideal for our work" said resource officer Andy Harper. "It uses less fuel than other machines, saving thousands of pounds over its lifetime.

The machine is very easy to maintain and the support from our dealer, K&M Mowers is excellent. All our operators are Hayter trained on site and our technical people undergo further training at Hayter."

Commenting on the new machines, John Skidmore, head of Streetscene services at the council said "This investment in new mowers will complement our existing fleet and reflects our continuing commitment to providing a well-maintained environment for everyone in the area.

These new machines are a welcome addition to the council's resources. As well as protecting the environment and our staff, the mowers should make a real difference to the team as they carry out their vital role."

K&M Mowers have supplied and supported Hayter Mowers for over 10 years and the company's comprehensive portfolio of brands includes Toro. K&M is owned by Russell Groundcare Machinery, the Yorkshire and Humberside agricultural machinery dealer. K&M serves several local authorities and has built the business on top quality brands, fully supported with an excellent parts and service operation supplying genuine manufacturers' parts.
