We have a problem with drainage on the pitch at St Mary’s, Southampton. The pitch is built over a gravel raft/carpet with drains laid every 3m below this. Above the gravel is a grit layer 50mm deep with a 200mm of rootzone laid over this.

It has been a season of upheaval in terms of the managers at the club. First Gordon Strachan left and was replaced by Paul Sturrock, now we have Steve Wigley in charge. As I write we've had 26 uses on the St Mary's pitch including training sessions-full article inside

The current mood is very good within the club at the moment. There are no worries about relegation as we've had in the past. It's a great weight off everybody's mind. This is nearly the end of our first season here at St Mary's

With four league games, two reserve matches, a friendly international and a pre-season friendly under our belt, I feel that the new pitch has made a good start this season. It is of course early days, but the signs are encouraging. Mind you it helps to have 32,000 experts in the stadium at every game!

We took over the pitch officially from the 2nd week in August, although we had been maintaining the ground since June. The contractors who have built the stadium and the pitch had continued with the fertiliser applications while we were doing the mowing.

What can be said about the season 2001/02? Well it was the last season at the Dell where Saints have been playing football for the last 100 years. It was also the wettest winter ever. And as we moved in the summer to our new home we witnessed an old gas work site being transformed into a 32,000 all seater wrap around stadium
