Thaw1.jpg Thaw's for thought!
3 days ago - General Sports - Dave Saltman - Issue 29 - Feb / Mar 2010
Hopefully, we are now seeing the back end of this winter's weather. It has been the harshest ever, certainly in my working lifetime. Golf clubs and sports facilities were closed for weeks, with a virtual permafrost biting into the top few inches of the ground, coupled with some copious amounts of snow.

Trade delegates [cropped] The future of our Industry
1 week ago - General News - Dave Saltman - 4 comments
Long before I gave up my day job as a Groundsman to embark on the Pitchcare adventure, discussions about trade shows, raising Industry profile and a unified single Association had been debated.

Design-Final09.jpg No More Agro!
14th Jan 2010 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - Issue 28 - Dec / Jan 2010 - 20 comments
2009 will be remembered for a number of different reasons, the main one being our failed economy pushing many to the edge of financial crisis.

BayerTrio2.jpg Working Magic
14th Dec 2009 - Football - Dave Saltman - Issue 27 - Oct / Nov 2009 - 1 comment
During a recent trip to Germany, Pitchcare’s Dave Saltman and Laurence Gale had the opportunity to look around the new stadium of Bayer Leverkusen with Head Groundsman, Dieter Prahl

Good News, Bad News
30th Nov 2009 - Editorial - Dave Saltman
For those of you who can remember the late sixties (I don’t, my Granddad told me about them!) there was a band doing the rounds called ‘Family’ who were, perhaps, best known for their top ten single Burlesque.

Survey - Trade Q1 Turf Industry Event Survey Responses
31st Oct 2009 - General News - Dave Saltman - 4 comments
Since Pitchcare started over eight years ago, we have been in the fortunate position to work very closely with both the trade and the practioners. During this time there has been much conjecture voiced and written about the future of the industry and the trade shows.

bullfighters.jpg What do YOU do in your spare time?
21st Sep 2009 - General News - Dave Saltman - Issue 26 - Aug / Sep 2009
For most of us, if and when we have any spare time, it is spent with the family, getting on with that overdue DIY project or the real chore of cutting the lawn. For a few greenkeepers in Portugal it's a bit different!

DaveSaltman-Aug09.jpg The FACT Factor
29th Aug 2009 - Editorial - Dave Saltman
Well, it appears that the gloves are off, the cards are on the table, or any other phrase you care to mention, with regard to the ‘state of play’ within our industry and, as so often happens, a few have ‘grabbed the wrong end of the stick’!

Dave Saltman The 'WHY' Factor
29th Jun 2009 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - 7 comments
Having pondered for a while as to whether I should have published my ‘X Factor’ editorial comment in the last issue, I have been both amazed and delighted at the response I have received from many key people within the industry.

Dave Saltman Do we need the X factor?
1st May 2009 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - 5 comments
Finding an online dictionary definition of X-Factor is almost impossible due to a certain mindless TV programme of the same name. However, an extensive search eventually reveals that it is: a hard-to-describe influence or quality; an important element with unknown consequences.

Alex Millar Alex Millar - Obituary
24th Feb 2009 - Industry - Dave Saltman - 6 comments
It is with sadness that I pass on the news that Alex Millar passed away last week. A great many people in the Industry will have worked with him and all will have known Alex as a warm, generous and passionate man.

Haywards Heath.jpg [cropped] Bad Press
24th Aug 2008 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - Issue 12 - Apr / May 2007 - 6 comments
It seems that our industry has a penchant for attracting bad press. A recent example would be the unfortunate greenkeeper at Haywards Heath Golf Club who ‘irrigated’ the course with weed killer, damaging vast areas of the course. No facts were given other than he was a ‘groundsman’ or ‘greens keeper’ depending on which paper you read.

Campey-and-Vredo.jpg [cropped] Go Dutch with quality not cost
10th Jul 2008 - General News - Dave Saltman
Thanks to Campey Turfcare, members of the press were invited on a two-day trip to Holland visiting the company premises and machinery of both Imants and Vredo. Details inside

Dave’s Foreword
17th May 2008 - Editorial - Dave Saltman
With a bias towards winter sport, forgive me for talking, again, about the high quality of the majority of the pitches that our Groundsmen produce. The winter brought with it a mixed weather bag and plenty of rain, which caused problems for those with a heavy fixture list.

Dave Saltman Attack of the clones!
29th Jan 2008 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - Issue 16 - Dec / Jan 2008 - 9 comments
It is six and a half years since Pitchcare was launched. In that time we have seen a steady growth in membership and, by the time you read this, we could well have busted the 30,000 members mark. No small feat for an idea that was considered, at best, ‘bonkers’ back in 2001.

The Richter Scale
26th Dec 2007 - General News - Dave Saltman - Issue 15 - Oct / Nov 2007
They had stopped en route to relieve themselves and were surprised at how sandy and free draining the local soil was!

In the aftermath of Floods
14th Dec 2007 - Cricket - Dave Saltman - 2 comments
At the end of August Pitchcare and the ECB invited cricket groundsmen from across the UK, whose pitches had been affected by the Summer flooding, to attend a seminar at Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s Headingley Carnegie Stadium

Renovating Wolves
22nd Jul 2007 - Football - Dave Saltman - Issue 13 - Jun / Jul 2007
For the second year running the Groundstaff (Terry, Wayne and Ken) undertook much of the renovation works themselves.

Healing old wounds
5th Mar 2007 - Editorial - Dave Saltman - 11 comments
Frank editorial in response to public comments from the IOG CEO.

rubbish 1 What a load of Rubbish!
27th Feb 2007 - Training - Dave Saltman - Issue 10 - Dec / Jan 2007
I’m a great believer in recycling to protect the environment so it was refreshing to see 100’s of tons of typical garden waste being brought into one of the Solum depots direct from the local community tip on lorries.
