What is a Drought Order?
13 Jun 2006 - Industry - Stella Rixon
This legislation enables Water Companies to ban use of MAINS water for commercial use such as sports grounds, golf courses, etc. It should be noted that other water sources such as boreholes, lakes, streams, etc are NOT affected by this ban - these water sources are owned by the Environment Agency, not the water companies. Therefore, provided the abstraction license allows it, and the Environment Agency do not bring in any restrictions, then these water sources are unaffected.

Impending Drought Orders
27 Apr 2006 - General News - Stella Rixon - 4 comments
To date 3 Water Companies - Southern Water, Mid Kent Water and Sutton and East Surrey Water have applied to the Secretary of State for Drought Orders, that if granted would allow them ban non-essential use. These bans would mean these water companies could stop a wide variety of water uses, including watering sports grounds and golf courses. However, each water company, in conjunction with DEFRA, will decide on what bans to put in place in their particular area.
