Approximately 250 thousand million cubic metres of water falls onto Britain each year with around 60% of it running into the sea. Much of that 60% is required by the environment, for hydrological processes, for navigation, and for other purposes, but saving just a tiny fraction of the excess of this quantity would provide all the country’s irrigation water requirements.
