"Spring into Action" was the call in March, when around 300 people attended a series of bowling green maintenance seminars in London and Scotland, with a central theme of getting the green ready for the
At St.Chads Bowling Club in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the clubhouse was full to capacity by 10 am, when bowling club Groundsmen and Local Authority personnel came to learn about the latest turf maintenance techniques.
David Luxford and Bob Chesham of SISIS explained the differences between the various tines and blades available and when to use them; Ben Petitjean from Barenbrug talked about seed production and the importance of buying "quality"; Scotts gave an interesting presentation on nutrition and common turf problems; and to round the day off, Avoncrop gave advice on the best top-dressings for bowling green use.
Up in Scotland SISIS teamed up with Scotts again, and with Stewarts of Edinburgh. Delegates were blessed with blue skies and sunshine for demonstrations of the new SISIS DART vertical action aerator and the range of SISIS Rotorakes; Scotts talked about nutrients and how to combat disease, and Stewarts gave a fascinating presentation on the history of bowling greens, followed by advice on up-to-date maintenance practices.Read more articles in Bowls, by Lynn Hilton or from March 2003.
