Carlisle groundstaff used an industrial pump to drain the pitch

Carlisle's League One home game against Swindon has been given the green light after a massive effort to drain water from the Brunton Park playing surface.

Staff worked all day on Friday to clear six to eight inches of water from the pitch after heavy rain in Cumbria.

"The groundsman had a sleepless night, but it was important to get the game on," Carlisle chairman Andrew Jenkins told Sky Sports News.

However, parking facilities at the ground will be limited.

Torrential rain on Thursday night caused widespread flooding in Cumbria, affecting more than 1,000 homes, while in Workington Pc Bill Barker died after a bridge collapsed.

At Brunton Park, staff used an industrial pump to help drain the water from the pitch. A dry night meant the surface was deemed playable at 10am on Saturday morning.
