After a couple of years outside the sports turf industry, Jonathan Buddington, the former groundsman of Ashbrooke in Sunderland and Head Groundsman of Hymers College in Hull, finds himself as the sole manager of surfaces at Wearmouth Colliery Welfare Ground at Carley Hill, Sunderland.

We tend to take for granted the vast range of products available to our ever-demanding consumer market place, not realising how many of the materials used in these products have their origins in a quarry in Leighton Buzzard. Silica sand and gravel, for example is used in water filtration and found in many common place products such as adhesives, grouts, tiles, bricks and pet care products to name a few.

Having a well-designed and constructed sports pitch is the goal of every sports club. In recent years, there has been a drive amongst numerous sporting organisations right throughout the UK and Ireland to improve existing facilities with the emphasis on their playing surfaces. However, through meeting many club representatives, I have come to realise that there is much confusion when it comes to actually deciding on how to go about their new construction or renovation project.

Alternative surfaces used for football have been around for at least forty years. The first surfaces were little more than a carpet consisting of a plastic based pile and backing layer. From these crude designs, a slightly more successful line of products followed with better quality materials and an infill layer of sand, known as the second generation.
