ET, the often quoted, but never quite explained. What is it? and should we be interested in it? Does it mean evergreen turf? electric trimmers?, elm trees? or extra-terrestrial? The answers to these and many more questions are deeply embedded in the soil-plant-water continuum, and this article aims to unravel a tiny bit of its mystery. - Read Article

Calculating the Distribution Uniformity of Irrigated Areas
Training - By Steve Prinn (17 Jan 06 15:00)
Although it may be hard to imagine as you read this, but some of you will this summer, be struggling for water. It seems that every year the well runs a little drier and the threat of global warming looms a little larger. We never really miss water and to a certain extent the climate in the UK is on our side, so… we may have to go a couple of weeks but on the whole we know that rain is probably around the corner. However when times are dry, even for brief periods, the effects of water applied through the irrigation system become apparent or perhaps it should be more correctly stated that the effects of non-uniform application of water become apparent. - Read Article

Water usage efficiency: An environmental must
Training - By Martyn Jones (04 Dec 05 9:00)
Conserving water resources is not merely a matter of irrigating less frequently or less intensely. It is a matter of ensuring maximum efficiency by preventing run-off, ensuring uniform infiltration into a sward, adjusting quantities and frequencies to suit the desired grass species and soil type, modifying applications in recognition of micro-climate variations, minimising evaporation losses, avoiding leakages, and accurate targeting of the area. - Read Article

The Answer Lies in the Soil
Training - By Martyn Jones (02 Dec 05 10:00)
The principles of soil physics are many and complex. Incorrect assumptions are often made and misdirected management decisions are taken. Consequently, irreparable damage, with far-reaching repercussions can occur. Inappropriate aeration practices or topdressing applications can dramatically affect the performance of a rootzone and, subsequently, the health of a grass sward. - Read Article

Where large percentages of Poa annua exist in mature turf, chemical control of the species is fraught with difficulties.
