RichardNortongood.jpg Shade Problems at the Reebok
19 Apr 2002 - Football - Richard Norton
The design of the Reebok stadium is undoubtedly fascinating, but the problems that it creates for the ongoing management of the grass surface have been a learning curve for all of us. The height of the television gantries in these new stadiums doesn’t help the cause of the Groundsman either.

What do celebrities such as Davina McCall, Bob Mortimer, Johnny Vaughan and Bobby Robson have in common? They have all answered England coach Sven Goran Eriksson’s call to action and offered David Beckham and the England team a message of support on the Come On England Flag.

With the recent dry weather, we have had to spend a lot of our time keeping the ground moist. I have just fertilised Ewood Park, the training ground and the Academy ground pitches with a Spring/ summer fertiliser application

We haven’t played at home since March 23rd, when we were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough.Since then we have played away through Easter and the first leg of the Champions League.

As in any line of work it is important to keep records, Chris Charles, a Groundsman who spends some of his spare time looking after two non-league football grounds keeps various records for reference.

The pitch at the Madejski Stadium hosted both rugby and football last season. It was felt that given the aspect of the new stadium and its wrap around structure, wasn’t beneficial to playing two sports without some form of reinforcement

When we left the ground on Friday, the home game against Walsall was five days away and the pitch seemed to be holding up quite well with the recent rain that we had encountered. By Sunday, I was a worried man, it never stopped raining all day and for the most part it was heavy rain.

25 Feb 2002 - Football - Paul Courier
The Northampton Town players have trained on the pitch this season 25 times already and this is added to the 29 first, reserve and youth team games played. The pitch has had its fair share of use, but the problem has been the fact that we have endured so many wet games.

14 Feb 2002 - Football - Keith Kent
Up until a few weeks ago, I had felt that the pitch was going to hold up and get us through another season of play, but the combination of games and the recent wet weather has deemed it necessary to re surface the pitch. The organisation of such a major mid season project may seem daunting, but much of the logistical groundwork has been done in the past.

Well, the Christmas and New Year hasn’t been particularly kind to us here at Leicester, it started on the 21st December where we put our evergreen frost covers out on the pitch in readiness of a –2 frost, heavy rain had fallen and the pitch froze prior to the West Ham game.

darrenbaldwin.jpg Rain stops play at Spurs
4 Feb 2002 - Football - Darren Baldwin
The game last Saturday against Bolton would probably have been played, had we had more grass on the pitch, but we were also extremely unlucky with the amount of rain that fell in such a short space of time. The referee had to make a decision

keith_kent.jpg Happy New Year
16 Jan 2002 - Football - Keith Kent
WOW that was Christmas that was? It is a long time since I last wrote but I have lots to tell. I don't know whether I am getting old or not but the magic of the festive fixtures seems to pass me by these days. I must admit that I had three days off in a row over Christmas. Someone who puts together the fixture lists must have decided that Old Trafford had hosted that many games already that we deserved a break!
