10 May 2006 - Cricket - Graham Large - 7 comments
The departing Groundsman, also an ex-player, gave me as much help as he could, but I quickly realised that the job was going to be a lot harder than I had ever imagined. The main task at that point leading up to the season, he told me, was to repeatedly mow the grass on the square until it could be distinguished from the outfield-full article inside

Now into the third year of the awards both Cricket World and Pitchcare have been delighted with the response, and the standard of the nominations. This year the number of categories has been increased from three to four. Following our experiences of previous years it was decided to add a Community Award to the list, which recognises the contribution of Groundsmen in the wider context of club and community matters. The winners of each category will be treated to a VIP day out at Lords during the summer.

gower2.jpg Gower Power to Customer Power
15 Dec 2005 - Cricket - Alan Lewis - 6 comments
I still remember as a young lad, sitting watching the test match on the BBC seeing a young batsman walk to the crease to begin his first innings for England. His name was D. I. Gower. He timed his first ball through the covers for four with effortless power, which went on to become his trade mark. What David Gower did, as all good batsman do, was to use the pace from the bowler, and off the pitch, to do the work for him.

The use of germination sheets should help encourage the grass to grow, but be careful with the use of covers as there is a risk of disease. Remove the covers during the day to minimise the risk, and spray with a fungicide if disease is spotted.
