It has been dubbed the Wembley of crown green bowls. Up to 2,000 bowlers enter the open handicap at Blackpool’s famous Waterloo green, hundreds watch the final stages of the two-month long competition and the event has been shown on TV.

Have equipment will travel is Ray Horrocks’ motto as he travels around the Huddersfield and Wakefield areas maintaining bowling greens. It is unusual for someone to make a full-time living looking after bowling greens, but it is a business Ray has gradually built up since he left his job as an engineer.

I recently sprayed the green to remove Clover and Parsley Piert, there were also a few patches of moss, not enough to warrant spraying the whole area, so I put some sulphate of Iron in a shaker container and hand treated the areas at about ¼ ounce per square yard.

It is a busy bowling season at Cleckheaton’s two crown greens with 20 different teams playing every week as well as a host of special competitions. With a close season of only about four months on the main green, there is little time for John Hawksworth and his co-Groundsman Keith Johnston to do the winter work.

With a wet autumn, we have had to pick the times when we can get on to do the end of season remedial works required, so as to get the greens prepared ready for next season. We have been cutting the greens through the summer at 3mm, but as the autumn drew in, the height of cut was set to 4mm with a once weekly cutting routine. We scarify all of the greens regularly throughout the season, but as the season finished we gave them a final scarify with two diagonal passes.
The season nears its end.

April is the month when work really begins on the greens. I managed to roll my greens and give them a light roll prior to carrying out any scarifying or top dressing. If you haven’t carried out any rolling previously due to the weather conditions think about it in April, go at least two ways corner to corner.
