Chris Wood, the ECB pitches consultant, has given official support for Bill Gordon, the Surrey groundsman, after criticism of the Brit Oval surface for the Test. One article in an Australian newspaper reported that Gordon had claimed to be somebody else to avoid being interviewed about his pitch. That piece has caused huge chuckles within the profession because Gordon is one of the most taciturn of the county groundsmen.

Wood said: "At every stage of the preparation process, Bill was in communication with me." In other words, if the pitch was prepared with a result in mind, then England were privy to it.

Well done Bill on this pitch it produced the finish and result we all wanted and if the Auiss batted as well as they should have would have scored over 300 runns in twics , then the match would have been even more intresting.

I think it showed just how good the Oval pitch is. Not many pitches would perform as well as it did with the ball breaking the surface. Not many stayed low and I didn't see any 'spit' at the batsman as so often happens in these conditions.
A normal Oval wicket would have guaranteed a draw.
So, thanks Bill the Ashes are ours, for a couple of years anyway.
