Clandeboye Golf Club, situated in the wooded countryside surrounding Lady Dufferin's Estate between Bangor and Newtownards, is the first club in Ireland to purchase the Jacobsen Eclipse 322 hybrid ride-on greens mower. Purchased in June from local Ransomes Jacobsen dealer, Brodericks NI, it was immediately put to use preparing the greens for Captain's Day.
The course manager is Terry Crawford and he is particularly impressed with the array of new features built into the mower. Commenting just after Captain's Day he said, "We took delivery on June 10th and it was put to use immediately, helping us prepare for our prestigious Captain's Day. I purchased this mower because of all the new features it possesses and, most of all, because it is free of hydraulic oil.
"All my staff have now experienced using the mower and are very impressed by its comfort and just how user friendly it is. It has an on board computer which allows the user to change almost anything to do with set-up; for example clip rates, cut speeds, travel speeds etc, the list goes on. This allows us greater control of how the greens can be presented according to the prevailing conditions.
"Overall the Eclipse 322 has proved to be an important asset for the golf club and is a very important piece of kit to the greenkeeping team. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of purchasing one."
Clandeboye is a 36 hole inland complex of championship calibre created in 1933 by William Renwick Robinson, a local linen merchant with a love of golf and a flair for landscaping. The 6,559 yard Dufferin was designed by one Baron Von Limburger and features masses of gorse, bracken and strategically placed trees with the added test of a prevailing north-east wind sweeping in across Belfast Lough.
The Ava course, designed by William R. Robinson, retains the second nine holes from a previous course, with additional holes added with as little disturbance as possible to the natural landscape. It features narrow fairways, established trees, gorse, heather and surface rock outcrops.
