The sixth Liverpool International Tennis Tournament should be the fastest yet - thanks to 62 tons of clay dumped on the Calderstones Park courts!

The public tennis courts have been carefully relaid over the past 10 weeks to ensure the fastest, truest playing surface the event has ever boasted.

And the first preparation was to lay a clay base which compacts and makes for a faster surface.

Producing tennis courts for an international tournament featuring world class players and legends is a hard enough task for any groundsman, but for Derek Cowan, head groundsman for the Liverpool Tournament, it's made even more difficult by the fact Calderstones is a public park.

For 42 weeks of the year, Calderstones Park's tennis courts, in the leafy suburb of Allerton, are open to the public for anyone to play on.
