As water resources become a more and more pressing issue, it is worth remembering that there is no water shortage present in the UK. If sufficient rainfall was captured, stored, and distributed, there would be enough for everyone. Indeed, if it rained everyday, starting very lightly in January, and rising month on month to peak in July before falling away again, there would be little need to irrigate sportsturf at all, even with current annual totals of rainfall. Pressure and the related stress, is the largest concern for a majority of the Head Groundsmen in First Class cricket. While being a taboo subject, due to the ‘macho’ image of groundsmen and sport in general, stress is nonetheless something that needs to be discussed and acknowledged.

As reported in November of last year the Premier League have taken on board the concerns of Groundsmen regarding the extensive nature of warm ups and warm downs. Guidelines have now been published and issued this week to all Premier League clubs.

Deep in the Downs of Sussex, crows have been causing damage to the fairways of a historic golf course for several years. The golf course is situated on natural chalkland, surrounded by open arable pastures with turf species consisting primarily of Fescue and Smooth Stalk Meadowgrass.

At the recent BTME show I managed to catch up with Simon Hutton, Director of Fineturf, when he visited the Pitchcare Internet cafe. Fineturf is a Lincolnshire company, based in Grantham, which Simon started himself when he was 18. It all began when he was working as a greenkeeper at the family’s golf course. More Inside.

The Parks and Countryside section at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council have invested in excess of £300,000 in new turf maintenance equipment for the 2005 season. The majority of the new equipment has been purchased from local turf dealer Ernest Doe and Sons Ltd and includes Ransomes ride-on and tractor mounted mowers.
