Disposal of waste

Those of you who are involved in organizing and/or running a Golf Course workshop i.e. Course managers and mechanics, have special responsibilities concerning disposal of waste materials. Some of this waste is the subject of legislation and other types are not. Those waste materials that are the subject of legislation must be disposed of in the approved manner and a record kept for three years, failure to keep an accurate audit trail can result in very heavy fines for your company (up to £20,000.00).

As of 16th July 2005 producers of hazardous waste should have registered with the Environment Agency and been issued with a Premises Code.
The list of controlled waste seems endless but much of it is not produced by readers of Pitchcare and is of no concern to us.

Some of the waste that may be produced from our type of industry that needs to be controlled is as follows:-

• Aerosols.
• Grease cartridges.
• Oil filters.
• Fuel filters.
• Oil & Petrol interceptor sludge.
• Batteries.
• Tyres.
• Cleaning fluid (Xylene).
• Brake fluid.
• Antifreeze.
• Neon tubes. (strip lights).
• Waste oil and any chemical stuff such as gloves, spray suits, masks, chemicals and chemical containers.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive study of waste regulations because it is too involved and specialized but help can be got from the Environment Agency web site, the site provides guidance on how to comply with environmental law as well as advice on good environmental practice.
