Do you manage your golf course on a low budget?

By Martyn Jones

Golf clubs have high expectations of the quality of their courses but few are prepared to have such high expectations of the budget required to manage them. As much as possible for as little as possible, is the general maxim. This, so often, is the unenviable dilemma in which Greenkeepers find themselves. It causes frustration and can lead to conflict between the Greenkeeper and the Club.

The National Turfgrass Foundation Conference at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool, 5th to 8th December 2005 aims to ease some of the tension by focussing on this problem. Helpful advice on how to manage a golf course on a shoestring comes from Alistair Beggs, Northern Area Manager, STRI and Advisor to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Professor Peter Landschoot, Pennsylvania State University, continues the theme with aspects of turfgrass management with minimum input. Graeme Francis, Hydroscape Limited, guides the audience through the topic of saving money by conducting a water audit on your course. Other presentations deal with the culture of fine fescues; reinstating links courses; managing turf without pesticides; and how to live in harmony with nature.

Whatever your budget, it will be wisely spent by attending this information-packed event. And the NTF girls (left), Linda and Louise, will be waiting to welcome you.
