Drag brushing is an essential part of any synthetic pitch maintenance programme. Through general use the sand infill will be naturally dispersed towards the edges of the pitch away from the high traffic areas. As the sand acts as the wearing course it is essential that this is returned back to these high use areas to prolong the life of the carpet. Drag brushing helps achieve this and is normally carried out with a drag brush or mat attached behind a suitable grounds maintenance vehicle on a weekly basis (industry standard). Technical Surfaces are able to offer this service or supply various types of drag brushes to carry out this process.

I have been having problems getting a grant from the Football Foundation ti install fencing and an all weather surface 40 x 20 yds. I have been told that the maintenance will cost me in excess of £3600 per year. Am I being stupid when i think this is a ridiculous price?

I assume that you may do much of the the work yourself, but if you cost in regular brushing and the capital expenditure of equipment, topping up any infill material on an annual basis and a rejuvination of the carpet every three years, as well as adding any fungicide treatments and regular disinfectants then I would think that at least £3.5k per year is right.

Then i must be stupid, although a maker of field turf, excellent material, has told me I need to brush and watch for fraying. they have even offered to send over someone to ensure it is laid properly. Unfortunately i do most of the work.

you should also budget annually to put money aside for a relay of the carpet after 12-15 years and this won't be cheap.

There are some articles on here that show the maintenance of a synthetic carpet to be more expensive than grass pitches-although you will get far more play on them.

If you let the carpet deteriorate and not spend money on maintenance then the qualities of the carpet will diminish quickly and it will become more costly to repair.
