A Village football team is on the brink of closure because of the poor state of its pitch and changing rooms, writes Sarah Holmes.
Heath Panthers was founded in 1987 and has been based at Thrift Road Recreation Ground in Heath and Reach, with a junior section attached.
The club has had its ups and downs over the years, including a pitch invasion by moles, and this time the Football Association and local league has blown the final whistle on what it sees as unacceptable playing facilities.
Three senior teams have been running this season and the club now has until June 30 to either sort out the problems or find an alternative premises or they will not be able to play in the 2011/2012 season.
Neither option was feasible to the club within the timescale set.
Due to the recent drought, grass has not established on the pitch leaving the sand base visable across the middle of the pitch and in the goal mouths making the pitch unplayable.
Planting a close relation to the garlic bulb has proved a great deterrent for moles solving that problem.
