Garside Sands announce new Scholarship for Sports Surface MSc

Press Release

Full-time students wishing to enrol on Cranfield University's unique Sports Surface Technology MSc will have even more incentive, thanks to a new scholarship being offered by the leading silica sand producer Garside Sands, based at Leighton Buzzard.

All potential full-time students will be given the opportunity to compete for a study scholarship generously provided by Garside Sands, a subsidiary of Aggregate Industries PLC. This offers an outstanding opportunity for a student to develop their personal understanding of sports surfaces by undertaking this scientific course, as well as working closely with one of the leading suppliers of sports sands in the country.

The scholarship will cover student fees and contribute towards living expenses. In return, the student will work with the company and the university academics to develop a personal research project to further enhance existing research and development programmes undertaken by Garside Sands.

Alex Vickers, Course Director of the MSc in Sports Surface Technology, said: "This is a tremendous opportunity for a student to combine the academic elements of the study programme with a highly practical, academically rigorous yet commercial research project. Garside Sands have shown a genuine commitment to supporting their product development with advanced research and the university is delighted to have them as partners through this scholarship."

Colin Parke, General Manager of Garside Sands, developed this initiative in order to better understand the specific needs of the different sports markets through closer liaison with key industry professionals. This will enable Garside to develop specialist product ranges that meet the exacting specifications of the sports industry.

The scholarship will be open to any full-time student accepted on the MSc programme in Sports Surface Technology for the coming academic year (Oct 2004). Ends
