Green-fingered Bill Barnes has picked up a prestigious cricket award - at the age of 80.
The groundsman at Barnby Dun Cricket Club for 15 years had his success in creating a perfect pitch recognised in the 2008 Groundsman of the Year awards, sponsored by CricketWorld.com and Pitchcare.com.
He was presented with a Commended Certificate awarded in the private club category for groundsmen across the UK by Doncaster Central MP Rosie Winterton.
She said: "I am really pleased to be able to present this award to Bill, which is in recognition of his hard work and high standards achieved in maintaining the grounds at Barnby Dun Cricket Club.
"This is an important recreational facility within the community, and I understand that the club has a very close relationship with local schools and has provided opportunities for over 70 young people."
Barnby Dun CC, established in 1870, was a founder member of local cricket leagues. The junior team is thriving and has consistently produced a steady supply of young cricketers to the Yorkshire schoolboy and representative teams in recent years.
