Leading consulting engineers Giles Wardle and Marcus White of Irriplan have continued to demonstrate their ability to provide irrigation solutions for golf clubs at both ends of the budgetary scale during 2007, delivering value to their clients through independent engineering, design and competitive tendering.
In addition to their ongoing work at prestige venues including the Castle Course at St Andrews, the G West development in Perthshire and the Taghazout development in Morocco for David McLay Kidd, finding the best solution for fairway irrigation at St. Ives Golf Club in Cambridgeshire was one of the most challenging projects.
There are few new golf developments that wouldn't benefit from fairway irrigation during grow-in, but the cost is often prohibitive. However Irriplan came up with an affordable solution for the Cameron Sinclair-designed 18-hole Championship course. The entire irrigation system cost less than £250,000 for double-row coverage to greens, tees, approaches, fairways and also back-to-back greens surround sprinklers with central PC control and a variable speed pumping plant. Irriplan's independent engineering-led approach, as opposed to a supplier-centred approach, enabled them to provide this client-focussed solution.
The company has also recently completed its first design for Städler Courses for the 9-hole extension to Föhr Golf Club on Föhr Island off the North West coast of Germany and has seen an increase in enquiries from golf clubs wanting advice on water abstraction licensing and rainwater harvesting and storage to the extent that Irriplan currently has 10 reservoirs in the process of design and planning.
