The Millennium Stadium provides a superb sporting and concert arena, but is very challenging for the growth of good pitches. The lack of light, as shown by an STRI hemiview light study, was insufficient for growth for much of the year, and a rapid decline in sward quality often occurred.

The London Golf Club was awarded the European Open as late as February of this year, which left just four months to get the course and infrastructure into peak tournament condition. Laurence Gale joined the volunteers who helped out during the event.

With a fiercely proud County cricket side, two top teams playing both codes of rugby, and Leeds United FC, the city of Leeds has a sporting heritage second to none in the UK.
Home to much of this activity is Headingley Carnegie. Cricket and rugby are played here at the dual stadiums on the site, with Leeds United playing ‘across town’ at Elland Road.
