On a recent visit to Gloucester I got lost, not for the first time I hasten to add. I was on my way to meet up with Gareth Balmer at Gloucester Rugby. I pulled in at a school to get directions and, fortunately, the Head Groundsman was working by the entrance and he very kindly put me right.

Alternative surfaces used for football have been around for at least forty years. The first surfaces were little more than a carpet consisting of a plastic based pile and backing layer. From these crude designs, a slightly more successful line of products followed with better quality materials and an infill layer of sand, known as the second generation.

The Adams and Stewart soil binding test (ASSB) or Motty test as it is commonly known is still a very good method for measuring soil strength. Particularly in that it can be simply done at home without the need to use specialist equipment.
