Tragedy has struck Italian football after a Lecce groundsman was killed by a bolt of lighting today.

The Serie B squad had been involved in training when a sudden storm forced them to take shelter in the dressing room.

Antonio De Giorgi had remained outside to collect all the training equipment when he was freakishly struck.

Ambulance and paramedics immediately arrived onto the scene but were unable to revive the 42-year-old.

He leaves a wife and a son behind him and Lecce are now set to ask for their match with Cesena to be postponed.

It has not been confirmed yet but it is also likely that there will be a minute silence during all fixtures in the Italian league this Saturday and Sunday.
