Two thousand sq metres of Lindum Turf are transforming London's Trafalgar Square on their way to a permanent site on the banks of the Thames.

As part of the Visit London's Villages Campaign, organised by Visit London to promote the city, Lindum's hardwearing Landscape turf left the Thorganby growers on Wednesday 23rd of May and arrived at the famous landmark to be laid overnight on a protective membrane.

Yesterday and today (Thurs. and Friday) the turf, covers the entire flat area between the two fountains and around Nelson's Column giving visitors and city dwellers an unexpected parkland environment.

Stephen Fell, Lindum's MD, viewing the final result said the whole mood of the square had changed. "Covering it with grass, changed the atmosphere and encouraged people to stop, sit and picnic, much as they would in a London park."

Tonight (Friday) the turf will be lifted and then transported tomorrow (Sat.) morning to Bishop's Park in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and laid in a permanent position on an area of heavy wear beside the Thames. The Borough's Parks Development Officer, Iain McFadyen said that the turf was ideal for this purpose. "This is a popular area alongside the river and underlying plane trees," he explained. "It gets a lot of wear, especially during the Oxford and Cambridge boat race, and it needed to be re-turfed quickly, with a hardwearing sward. Lindum's turf has come at just the right time."

Lindum who have a range of specialist grass products are building themselves a reputation for turfing unusual areas. Their thick turf created a temporary tennis court in Trafalgar Square last year and the company's Grassfelt is a familiar sight on exhibition stands, grass sculpture and Chelsea Flower Show gardens.
