Five of the Olympic Stadiums at the Beijing Olympics will feature Barenbrug grass seed on their sports and athletic pitches. The 91,000-seater National Stadium, or The Bird's Nest' as it has become known, will have to wait until the day after the opening ceremony for its turf to be laid.

Sown in August 2007 the turf is currently being made ready for its starring role in the athletics competitions, which start a week after the opening ceremony. The men's and women's football finals will be played on the same turf later in the month on 23 and 24 August.

Barenbrug China started discussions with Chinese officials as early as 2004. Testing of various mixtures resulted in the selection of the Barenbrug mixture as the best turf for this prestigious location. While the specification of the mixture remains secret, Kentucky blue grasses bred by Barenbrug are well represented.

The selection of Barenbrug China as the exclusive supplier of grass seed for the National Stadium was awarded by the Chinese National Sports Group.

Barenbrug grass has also been selected for the playing surfaces of four of the other new Olympic stadiums in Shenyang, Tianjin, Shanghai and Qinghuangdao.
