A newly installed Otterbine aerating fountain is helping to keep a Nottingham Trent University pond clean and clear.
The three interconnected ponds on the university's Clifton Campus collect rainwater runoff from the roofs of the surrounding student residences. However, the ponds are prone to duckweed and silt build-up, and so landscape services co-ordinator Alan Horgan turned to Otterbine.
"We were looking for something to improve the water clarity and also the area's aesthetics," Alan reveals. "Otterbine is a strong name in the marketplace, plus I wanted to invest in a quality unit as the old product we installed wasn't robust enough."
A new Otterbine Gemini aerating fountain with attractive spray pattern now has pride of place in the largest of the three ponds, which is approximately 20m in diameter. By introducing oxygen into the water, the fountain will effectively control algae, aquatic weeds and potential water stagnation.
"I'm very happy with the fountain," Alan says of the unit, which was installed by contractor SJS Irrigation. "I've had many positive comments about the improvement it has already made to the area. I look forward to seeing how it performs in summer when the potential for duckweed and algae can become a problem."
