Rare species principally protected for conservation purposes
Some species are listed on Schedules 2 and 5 to the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (PDF 420 KB) and are known as European Protected Species (EPS). Examples of EPS are; bats, hazel dormouse, great crested newt and the otter.
Some species are also protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This legislation protects all wild birds and certain native animals and plants listed on Schedules 5 and 8 of the Act. Protection can vary according to need. Examples of these species include adder, pine martin, water vole and red squirrel
