Concerns over the lack of rough at Royal St George's for The Open Championship next month have receded following the recent rain showers.
Golf's oldest major returns to Sandwich next month, but the unusually hot and dry spring had an impact on the famous course. The main worry was the rough, which had not grown sigificantly since the winter.
Fortunately for the organisers the steady downpours over the last few weeks have come just in time, much to head greenkeeper Graham Royden's relief.
He said: "The rain we've had over the last three-and-a-half weeks has been a help onsite. It's been the driest spring for over 100 years, which has given added pressure to the preparations. Now the course has greened up and the rough is starting to move to where we would like it."
