Cathkin High School's grass pitch is finally set to open to its pupils this August - nearly FOUR YEARS after the school itself opened.
The new £22.3 million Cathkin High was built on the site of the school's old grass football and rugby pitches, with the custom-built school opening its doors in October 2008.
Morgan Sindall was the main contractor for the design and build of Cathkin High School and associated sports facilities through the inspirED consortium, but sub-contracted the Cathkin build and associated sports facilities to Rok.
Early last year the Reformer reported that work on the pitch was on hold again after Rok went out of business.
In February 2010, Rok's attempts to hand over the pitch were knocked back by South Lanarkshire Council as they were unhappy with the condition of the playing surface - with complaints of large stones and huge bumps being found on the pitch - and SportScotland also slamming the shoddy condition of the grass.
Council chiefs were refusing to pay for the playing fields until they were in a fit state for pupils to use, with the lack of drainage being a real problem.
Although Cathkin's football teams have been able to use the artificial pitch at the school - ironically on the site of the old main rugby pitch - the rugby teams were struggling to play matches at home.
Some fixtures were fulfilled after the school were allowed to use Cambuslang Rugby Club's nearby pitch.
