Significant Investment at Lanark Golf Club
Lanark Golf Club is renowned for its smooth fast greens, natural moorland fairways and beautiful scenery. Originally laid out by Tom Morris and later refined by James Braid, Lanark is built on a substrate of glacial sands, providing the unique feeling of tackling a Scottish links course at 600 feet above sea level. Variously described in golfing publications as a hidden gem and a geological marvel, at 6,428 yards from the Championship tees, the par of 70 can be a real test to any golfer, especially when the prevailing wind blows.
The Club has recently invested in new turf maintenance equipment from Fairways GM, Ransomes Jacobsen's dealer for the region. The new equipment includes the latest Jacobsen fairway mower; an articulated rotary for maintaining the rough and a trailed top dresser.
The LF3800 fairway mower was selected as the preferred machine, following a series of demonstrations by all the leading manufacturers, as it was the top performer according to course manager, Jim Lyons. "It's powerful, well suited to our undulating course and has an excellent quality of cut and finish", he said.
Jim saw the Jacobsen AR250 in action at a local course on a very inclement day and was impressed with the way it hugged the undulations, while other machines performed less well. Apart from its contour hugging ability, he also thought it was very straightforward to use, after having it on trial for a period of time at Lanark.
The trailed top dresser is a Turfco WideSpin 1530 and will be used extensively during the season on a 'little and often' basis with light applications on greens, tees and regular lies. Heavier applications will be laid down in the autumn. "It does what you want it to do and is the leader in its class", said Jim.
Greens Convener Joe Fallano added that to date the club was very happy with the level of service from the Fairways team. "The machines have also performed extremely well", he said.
