Phil Frost has been made redundant by Somerset CCC after 23 years preparing the club's pitches.

Phil, who was featured in last year's June/July issue of the Pitchcare magazine, won numerous awards during his time with Somerset. Taunton has long been regarded as the best batting pitch in England which is why, presumably, it has been the recipient of so many accolades.

Phil first joined the club as 15 year old youth player, but developed an interest in pitch maintenance. After many years experience at the club and elsewhere he returned to take over the position of Head Groundsman in 1987, and was one of the longest serving and most experienced on the County circuit.

Five times winner of the coveted Cricket Groundsman of the Year Award, Phil indicated in the article with us that there was some 'disagreements' between him and his 'superiors'. "My job is to prepare the best wicket I can within the timescale available. I am being told that wickets should be a more even contest between bat and ball. Fair enough, but to try and do that I need time on my wickets. And how can I do that when the fixture list is so crammed?"

One newspaper is reporting that Phil is suffering from an illness which is preventing him from working. We can categorically state that this is not the case.

No doubt a another case of 'forward thinking' from the management that they will no doubt live to regret big style.
Good luck & best wishes to Phil in whatever he does now and in the future.

All very sad. People are just like furniture, when they have served their purpose, dispose of them and get a fresher model.
Wonder if the ECB will make a comment?

Here's to one of the best, long may you remain a Thorn to the Rose. Sure we'll see Phil out there with again before too long. Good Luck with everything in the future, a true craftsman.

My commiserations if you read this Phil. I can only wish you and your wife the very best for the future.
I cannot believe what i am hearing. Lets hope there is some light at the end of the tunnel mate. As hard as it might be, it sounds as if you are better of out of it.
Pacman, Phil would not have changed the loams. It is called peer power.

Absolutely gutted for you Phil. One of the most decent , honest, hardworking blokes in the industry who has a heart of gold.
I know it was always a struggle with the hierarchy Phil but you kept your head held high and got on with your work like a true professional. You will be sadly missed and a great loss to Somerset County Cricket Club - but it's their loss.
Good luck for your future and keep in touch - you know where I am.

Good luck for the future Phil.
If you're ever passing Weston you'd be more than welcome to pop in for a well deserved beer or three - If I'm not there just tell the barman to ring me and I'll turn up pdq.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
