Rennes have become the first French club in Ligue 1 to be granted dispensation by the football authorities to lay a synthetic pitch for use during their home games next season…

Stade Rennais have been granted permission by the LFP to give their pitch a drastic summer overhaul, laying down an artificial surface as the Council of Administration elected to lift a ban on the use of synthetic surfaces.

A FIFA 2 Star pitch will therefore be laid in the Stade Route de Lorient over the summer months in time for Rennes' Intertoto Cup campaign, which will start in mid-July.

Ligue President Frédéric Thiriez told France Football, "There was a small revolution: we opened the way with for synthetic pitches and authorised Rennes to build an artificial lawn."

"France wants to be advance; the future is a synthetic one. It guarantees more equity, a better spectacle and supports an attractive game."

The debate regarding synthetic pitches has long raged with their detractors arguing that plastic pitches are responsible for a high number of injuries.

On the other hand the even playing surface lends itself to a fluid style of play that encourages a technical style of football.

Supporters of Rennes will be able to make up their minds from a firsthand perspective very soon.

Dunfermline sound familiar? Small club thinks plastic solves all problems! If you are a small club with poor footballers you will still be a small club with poor footballers on any surface. I give it 2 seasons.
Plastic lends itself to a 5 aside style game with zero tackling and contact thats for sure. Next they will say Arsenal do not play a fluid technical style!

I intend to live forever, so far so good...

Interesting to see that there might be a plastic pitch back in the SPL next season at newly promoted Hamilton.....

And since when did it suddenly become difficult to maintain a grass pitch in third world France? Not recently if you look at this picture of the stadium in question!

Hamilton are installing natural grass pitch for start of season.
