Thomson Perrett & Lobb, the golf course design practice founded by five-times Open Champion Peter Thomson with partners Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb, is to undertake bunker renovation work at Wimbledon Park Golf Club, south west London.
Founded in 1898, Wimbledon Park Golf Club is a hidden jewel in the suburbs of London, nestling between the Lawn Tennis Club and Wimbledon Park, and easily accessible from central London and the M25.
It boasts a magnificent 18-hole golf course, short game practice area and a putting green and, in parts, particularly from the 12th hole, enjoys commanding, panoramic views of south London beyond its tree-lined vistas designed by Capability Brown.
TPL principal Tim Lobb said: "Wimbledon Park Golf Club has a rich and colourful history and is a classic English parkland layout. Our plans are to review the current bunkering across the whole course and implement a design plan that will enhance the playing experience for members and guests."
Over the years, Wimbledon Park Golf Club has seen many changes, most notably four clubhouses. A fire destroyed the first one in 1901 with a replacement built near the present 18th tee.
In the 1930s, when alterations to the golf course were also proposed, another clubhouse was constructed, only for it to be subsequently destroyed in World War II, during the Blitz. The World War II bombings also made changes to the golf course and a bunker near the 13th green was created from one of the numerous bomb craters. Course manager,
David Langheim, said: "TPL's work will undoubtedly give all golfers a greater strategic challenge when they play Wimbledon Park, but the improvements will also enhance the aesthetics of the course and make it much more appealing to the eye."
