Features including its rugged construction and the accurate seed placement offered by the Vredo overseeder have persuaded leading sportsground contractor Mallinson's to invest in a pair of the seeders from Campey Turfcare.
Established in 1961 and now with a workforce of more than thirty, Ormskirk-based Mallinson's offers construction, drainage and renovation services for football and rugby pitches, golf courses and racecourses. High profile clients include Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa and Derby County football clubs.
A crucial operation is reseeding football pitches and golf fairways to give new vigour to worn turf, while allowing a quick return to play. Choosing the right seeder is essential to give even and strong germination, while causing minimal disturbance to the existing sward.
Built in Holland and designed specifically for heavy duty work such as contracting, the Vredo Overseeder uses v-shaped cutting discs to produce a sharp slit, preserving the turf to either side. Seed is placed in the bottom of the slit, insuring good seed to soil contact. The roller presses down to cover the slit. Seeding depth is adjustable from 0.5cm to 2.5cm and rates are precisely adjustable.
After trialling a number of seeders, Mallinson's chose the Compact version, with an 1.8m working width and 180 litre seed box capacity. Seed spacing of 7.5cm is ideal for sports pitches and fairways. The close coupled design of the Compact and a weight of just 965kg makes it an ideal partner for smaller tractors, giving a gentle tread on the turf.
The Vredo Overseeder stood out from the competition, John maintains: "They are very well constructed and the price was very competitive. But more importantly all my staff preferred them to any other make - they said the Vredo was the best performing machine that they trialled. They will be using them, so it is important that my staff like the machine."
Seed placement was another factor in the Vredo's favour. "The discs slice the ground so that the seed is planted very well and has an excellent germination rate. Vredo makes a very good disc seeder which is ideal for renovating established turf," says John.
Mallinson's trialled the seeders over a few days to make sure that they were suitable for the company's varied contracts and John says that they have continued to perform as expected.
"We have had no problems with the Vredo Overseeders but if anything were to go wrong, Campey Turfcare is only 40 miles away, and I know the company would sort the problem out straight away. Campey provided excellent customer service and I would definitely buy from them again," he concludes.
