Think of Headingley and the mind probably conjures grey skies, green pitches and seam bowlers rubbing their hands in expectation. As far as Yorkshire are concerned, that common perception could not be more wrong.

The truth is that surfaces have become so batsman-friendly that the club have spent the winter trying to spice up the square in an attempt to give those very same bowlers reward for their growing toil.

"There is a misconception that comes from history," Martyn Moxon, the Yorkshire director of cricket, said. "If you told one of our bowlers that wickets at Headingley come cheap, you would get very short shrift."
