What is the "Crown" Measurements on a football pitch?
24 Jan 2007 by Steve63
I don't believe there is any " crown " spec for a football pitch.

True. As i am a college student, i've been asked the crown measurements of a football pitch.

Is that a question all college students get asked these days then?

crown could be the centre circle which will be 10yds from the centre (diameter)

The pastor at MUFC took me to Old Trafford on a tour a few years ago.
The biggest surprise was the size of the crown ... a fall of 4 inches from the centre to the side. Crouching by the halfway flag you couldn't see the opposite side.
They also built crowns in the goalmouths to aid drainage etc, so the keeper had a few inches headstart .. and presumably could reach the crossbar easier. I wonder if there should be limits on that !

Perhaps the cross bar shold be cambered with the goalmouth?
I think the the word camber would be more accurate a term, and a cambered pitch would assist drainage during heavy rainfall. As to how much is recommended, not sure but a crown green can be, I think, 6" to the sides and 10" to the corners on a 40 yard green.

Steve

When I rebuild golf tees I always put a fall in of 1:100 and nobody ever notices. It certainly gets the surface water away.

From reading your question 8 times (7 times thinking what the hell are they teaching nowadays) I think.... I hope....... I know what your after, it was all mentioned by the posts earlier.........
The Crown on a Pitch would be the camber/rise/hump/ridge through the centre of a lot of older pitches or as said the Goalmouths. The measurement of the Crown would... I suppose... be the level of the centre circle (assuming highest point) in relation to the side line/goal line. This could be reflected as a straight forward Xmm or as a Fall ie 1:XX.
This Crown is there to assist the removal of surface water, positive drainage and was/is invariably built up over many years by the dressing of sand and soil through the area with most wear.... through the middle, centre circle and goal mouths.
We invariably remove Crowns on relays where Laser Grading is specified AND an option or work with them, easing highs to a more subtle camber, especially on Goal Mouths but each customer has their own views. We even had to build in Crowns into a Goal Mouth renovation for one local authority. On most new constructions a straight crossfall is normal, each site dictating. I am not aware of any crown being specified in a construction as modern drainage systems are better suited to a crossfall, but there are many more experienced pitch people on here than me who may disagree.
My thoughts...... but it would be good to hear what your lecturers want.....you never know it may educate all us people out here who actually do the job for a living.....
Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!
