with the progression of artificial grass football pitches,
how long before we see fully artificial golf courses?

In southern Spain there are a number of artificial grass driving ranges being built. It enables them to limit the volume of water that they use. Alongside these are some top qualltiy natural turf courses though.

With the huge acreages required to provide a golf course I personally cannot see the environmentalists allowing huge tracts of land being turned over to artificial.
Perhaps in inner city areas or in arid regions of the world but surely not in the UK countryside. I hope not.

Can you imagine that cost in turning a complete golf course into an artificial.
I know that there is a lot of money in golf (compared to some other sports) but I'd imagine that there are very very few clubs that could even contemplate such an undertaking. You're talking a massive amount of acreage. Also what would you do with the rough - long artificial ?
On top of that, all the equipment (clubs etc) are optimised for use on grass. Yes, I'm sure the manuf's could do the same for playing on artificials. How many golfers can afford to have 2 sets of kit (+ spares) in case one of their matches might be on an artificial ?
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
