What is he worth
our volunteer groundsman at my local cricket club has become distgrundled recently due to lack of help from other members & is threatening to leave,he is 100% keen & has improved the pitches/ground to a high standard, how do we keep him, should we pay him by the hour or set amount per week etc,he works full time,as a skilled mechanic ,so repairs our machinery as well

well dave what do you think he is worth ??????
if you follow the IOG Tight Ass scales he will probably leave and get a part time job cleaning chewing gum off the path that earns more. what sort of job does he do is the question that you should ask your self! if it is good and worth it!!! then lead from the front and pay what you think. Rather than being a sheep and paying him a rubbish wage which will make him leave like the rest.

What's it worth
The players/members would soon realise what they have lost if he leaves them to do the work. He probably puts in 10-12 hours plus a week so pay him £100. If the club got in a contractor it would cost at least that, and you may not get the TLC that your groundsman provides. If its left to the players, then they will play on a crap wicket, moan like hell and eventually pay thru the nose for someone to dig it up and start again. Tell the committee to swallow pride and pay the man his due

worth his weight in gold
Personally, I think volutneers are worth their weight in gold... so rather than ask us what he's worth, talk to him, ask him howbest you can support him, financially or otherwise (sometimes he might appreciate additional help doing what he obviously does incredibly well).
Some volunteers want recognition, and respect -it's not always about money. Pay costs for any parts for machines that he repairs (goes without saying really, doesn't it)
Mind you, £100 a week is not to be sneezed at either!
That's my penny-worth... I've missed Pitchcare -haven't been on a for a while, and am here in disguise...
Hope you're all enjoying the weather !
