Ok let the ecomafia explain this run of weather, global warming my a%#e

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

25 Jun 2007 by jlawrence

Personally I'd prefer it not to be referred to as Global warming. Global Warming is a phrase that's come from lord only knows where and means absolutely diddly squat.
We're in a period of climate change - and that affects all weather patterns not just the temperature.
The arguments as to whether the change is man made or not will continue for years and years - then there's the discussion to be had as to whether we should even be attempting to do anything about it. Is it right to even attempt to alter the weather patterns assuming that mankind in their arrogance believes that they can.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

25 Jun 2007 by chrismitchell

jlawrence, I am %100 with you on that. It is all about stealing more of our hard earned cash in the name of being eco friendlly. Do people really believe that by using a low energy bulb thay will turn the local power station to a lower reglo, course not, the power station has to run all the time whether it supplying 1 watt or 1000 magawatts. Remember it is only 15000 years since the last ice age!

Chris - please don't remind be about low energy bulbs. They're fluorescent bulbs and as such completely incompatible with my automation system. Wonderfull - for the sake of a few quids worth of electricity I have to replace 100's of pounds worth of controllers.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Avatar: Parson Russell Terrier 25 Jun 2007 by tonybolton

There's certainly something a bit different in our recent weather and I agree with JL, climate change is a far more accurate expression than the alarmist 'global warming'. In the case of the British Isles hotter temperatures in Arctic regions and the melting of the Polar ice caps and release of cooler waters into the Gulf stream could in theory lead to a cooling effect and a further ice age, not much warming in that then!!.

Just another reason for politicians to meddle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as low energy bulbs are in fact small flourescent tubes are we not adding to polution, bearing in mind tubes contain mercury compounds which are highly toxic. Ordinary tubes are no longer allowed to be put in the dustbin and businesses have to be licensed to dispose of them.

If we all took the general attitude of most of you guy's and buried our heads in the sand.... The lives your children live or their children may not add up to a whole lot.

I think it is important that we take stock of what we are doing to this planet. When in the history of the planet earth was fossil fuels burnt on the scale they are today. There has to be a negative effect from that and nobody can predict what that may be.... because it has never happened before. And that's just one of the pollutants we are chucking up into the atmosphere. The atmosphere that we rely on to stay alive!

Oooh ! nothing seems to stir up more debate than green issues these days , before we all rant about Carbon size tens we should consider things that DO need adressing like totally unnecessary Junk Mail (my pet hate) and excessive packaging on a lot of things these days (ever tried setting up your average childrens playset at Christmas ?) or the sealed for life disposable society we seem to have ended up in , whilst its ok and nice just to buy a new one , what about production materials/energy useage and by-products/pollution and then disposal issues , all need to be looked into , not looking into new fangled taxation for anyone daring to drive more than ten miles a day.

God forbid we all have to drive around in Smart Cars and use those stupid light bulbs that take an age to warm up , they,ll all end up in museum one day - "Did we really use those...?"

wow, some real ignorance is being shown up on this thread.
but, don't worry guys. go and live in america with your selfish and outdated statements. you can have you 10 x 100watt light bulbs around your mirrors in your 3 bathrooms, with the air con running all day, whether you're there or not. you can dry ALL your clothes in the clothes drier, because you would all be too lazy to walk out and hang them to dry naturally. you can even be excited about the great automotive breakthrough that sees the new buick, chevy or ford break the 26mpg barrier. you can drive to and from the shops in you 4x4's that are as big as a lorry. i've lived there, i've seen it. it's an ignorant attitude that is being shown here on this thread.
then go tell the people in bophal, south america etc, that anything you civilised people do to make you cheap bucks doesn't affect them, or the future lives of this world. keep on tearing down the lungs of this earth, rainforest timber looks oh so lovely, doesn't it.
burn those fossil fuels guys, it doesn't matter, who are the clowns whingeing about the holes in the ozone layer?? what's that all about.
we all work outside, (unless we do nothing but sit in a uni all day), noticed how the sun burns more now than it did 15yrs ago??
why do you think that there are european countries that are in the process of banning toxic chemicals that we use to combat our pests. the residual and run off effects are destroying the very nature that we love.
it's all about the balance of nature, you clowns.
balance.
everything this generation is doing destroys it.

kb,it looks like there is someone alse witha bit of common sense on this thread.
isn't it funny how people embrace scientific and technological advances, when it makes their lives a little easier? except when these discoveries cost something, or eat away at their conscience, if they're not prepared to make some kind of sacrifice.....

27 Jun 2007 by jlawrence

rooter that's no better than the b*****x that the government keep spouting. How about backing up some of them statements with some scientific FACTS.
You can't - why cos even the scientists can't.
Is the problem man made ?
or is it just that we're contributing to an already occurring phenomenon ?
Is what we're contributing having a major or minor effect ?

Over the years (I mean lots of years) there have been numerous major global climate shifts. They happen and are a natural cycle of our planet.
All the major scientists get together and all they could come up with is that their consensus of opinion is that man is probably contributing to the change. Science, consensus of opinion WTF. Science is about dealing in facts not consensus'.
All we have on this matter is opinion. If the guys who have access to all the data and figures can't understand them and come up with proof of what's happening then what chance have we.
All we can do is base our opinions on the garbage that people are telling us. Sit down and look at both sides of the equation and you'll come to the same conclusion as me - something doesn't add up.

CO2 levels play a minor role in the various greenhouse gases - and man's CO2 emissions play and minor part in what is already a minor role. Yet that's what the government like to focus on and berate us about.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't be more responsible and reduce the crap that we pump into the environment. I just don't believe all the hype that is being placed on the overall importance (globally) of what we're doing. There's too much bulls**t being said about the exceedingly minor things (like car CO2 levels).
It could well be that there is something we're doing that is having a major effect. My guess is that if there is then the g'ment can't tax us on it so they don't mention it.
Fossil fuels are old, dirty and running out. Yet the search for a replacement isn't happening - or if it is it isn't happening in the public eye. Almost all the so called 'new' fuels rely at some point in their production on the very fossil fuels they're supposed to be replacing.
Remember most (if not all) of what we hear is driven by government. The research is either conducted or funded by government. And the government is run by politicians - enough said ;).

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

27 Jun 2007 by chrismitchell Last edited 27 Jun 2007

Have to say I agree with you jlawrence , it is mostly propaganda. What are the chances of a replacement for fossil fuels all the time they are still available? None, there is too much money at stake and the control of other countries with it.
I still want to know where all these mercury compounds used in low energy bulbs is going to be put when they have to be disposed of. There will be a lot of them because like flourecent tubes the dont last very long if constantly turned on and off. Lets face it mercury based fungicides were banned 30 years ago because they do not break down in the soil and were highly toxic.

Whatever your beliefs, we should all take future generations into consideration.... To ignor the possibilities could destroy the lives of millions of people and we as the supposed intelligent beings on this planet can either carry on and not give a dam about anybody else or consider the possibilities of what could happen.... and what is already happening around the world.

I wonder how differently you would feel in you hadn't had something substantial to eat for weeks, was drinking water that you walked miles for, knowing that it was full of life threatening diseases, or you watched helplessly as your children died around you!

You'll be going home to a square meal as usual, sitting in a warm, safe house, sleeping in a cosy bed, knowing that tomorrrow you will eat 3 square meals again!

Gentlemen and ladies....
whatever we do in this little isle, if the effects are man made, are futile anyway because all the time China, Russia and Usa make no contribution to carbon footprints or whatever else we are all f*&##d anyway.
And Ken, while I agree that in certain countries all is not well, all the time greedy corrupt states control themselves appallingly and they continue to, as a people, 'rape' the welfare of others and in some instances act in murderous ways as bad as the nazis ever did the situation in the majority of poorer regions will never improve no matter how many lightbulbs we change. To little is ever done to rein these people in cos of the political influences of the usa/russia/france/uk and generally the money they all make on arms/oil/construction/mining and we can all bleat til we sick but we are just not going to change a thing.

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

27 Jun 2007 by rooter

propoganda???
you've hit the nail on the head chris. you have contradicted yourself big time. too much money involved. that's the only reason america won't sign the kyoto treaty to reduce carbon emissions. it is a wasteful society. bush would never sign it because he had the backing of the oil industry, the automotive industry and every big bad bas*ard going.
if we are not going to find alternative sources while we still have the fossil fuels, then how the hell are we going to find them when they are exhausted?? i understand your concerns caused by the disposal of the mercury compounds, and do believe alternatives should be found, but what the hell are we to do with nuclear waste, another no go, as far as this world should be concerned. again, i go back to the banning of toxic chemicals we use, not only in this industry. america don't give a stuff, domestically, they push anything and everything to the consumer, so joe a can have a better lawn than joe b.and the corporate world continue to reap the benefits from the exploitation of all around them.
but it's about the conservation of the sources and minerals we have. that has not happened. ok jl, kif the scientists have no facts, how can i?
fact, the ice age happened, and some other form of mass destruction will happen again.
we have opened a pandoras box of chemicals and toxins to advance this world into a pathetically easier place to live.
we are tearing down the rainforests of south america at what rate is it now??? that's a fact, bhopal is a fact, chernobyl is a fact. waste is a fact. our lifestyles have been wasteful since the boom of the 80's.
do we have to wait, sceptically, for scientific facts before we look to the future, to change our way of life.
do you, as a greenkeeper or groundsman, wait for the proof before you try different things. many believe in a higher, spirtual life, where's the proof? it doesn't stop us believing.
what i am saying is that there is a pig headed attitude going on here, blind faith in david ballamey won't help, and ignorance won't either.
all you clowns are quick to knock when it affects you. they're not after a quick buck, just a little preservation.
mass destruction will happen again, let it occur, NATURALLY

Right heres some science from NEW SCIENTIST MAGAZINE: CO2 levels on the increase right?! Good or Bad?
Well lets see...
a while back everyone thought the rainforests were the lungs of the world, well, sorry guys, theyre not.
EU puts controls on fishing, because cod on the decrease, but then Countryfile reports that fisher men are throwing back Cod, because they are not decreasing, WHY?
well, NEW SCIENTIST HAS THE ANSWER-
Its because THE OCEANS are the lungs of the world, and THIS is whats really happening:
CO2 levels increase
MORE OCEANIC PLANT LIFE
=MORE PLANKTON
=MORE FISH

The OCEAN is actually using up any INCREASE in CO2, so it isnt actually staying in the atmosphere and wreaking it.

As for chloroflorocarbons creating a whole in the Ozone layer (which is what causes us to get more burnt than before NOT increase in CO2 levels, so well clear THAT one up now), NEW SCIENTIST also recently reported that the hole over antartica is actually getting SMALLER
Humm, I wonder why that is if we are all selfishly driving our 4x4s like our American cousins.

NOW, before anyone wishes to tell me im wrong, I will happily debate this issue with anyone who has a background in SCIENCE and specifically the SCIENCE in question (so Sports science doesnt count im afraid), which im sure counts most people out. And for anyone who would like to question MY background, I have an A level in Biology and ive conducted a study on ecology and CO2 levels as part of my degree (while i was doing a geography module for those wishing to point out that my degree is a humanities degree and mostly theology based) and ive done a study on chloroflorocarbons and the effects on the Ozone. i also have a copy of the Kyoto summit summary.

20 years ago it was acid rain that was going to kill us all, I wonder wgat happened to that? Of course there is always Stephenson and his trains. He was told if you travelled more than 30 miles an hour you would suffocate, try telling that to the flying Scotman. Also did anybody see the channel 4 documentary called the great global warming rip off? It shot all of the popular myths down in flames. It is natural climate change and it backed up exactly the points Lizzie makes. Guess where the most poluted place on the planet is? A place in Brazil where all the catalytic converters are made!

When will anyone learn that this will never go away because of one simple reason. Governments, in whatever country and for whichever party will use some horsesh1t excuse to blame everything apart from the one thing actually causing the problems (APPARENTLY)...........CARS!

And the reasoning goes a little like this:-

The general internal combustion engine when invented some 100 and odd years ago remains the same today as it did back then. SO why when everything else has developed so dramatically since the Queen Vic was more than a boozer on a crap sitcom and ruled this fine EMPIRE has it remained the same. Because the whole world lives of the revenue gained from OIL, the most prevalent fossil fuel and one which is supposed to be reducing. Without the internal combustion engine(Petrol or Diesel) we'd have far better Co2 emmisions (apparently). Trouble is all the tree huggers seem to fail to realise that, as was highlighted on Sir D Attenborough's program, to grow enough natural resources to power our vehicles we have to pull apart the very 'lungs' as was mentioned before, of the planet. The Rainforests!!!! SO which one do we want?? WE can't save the bloody rainforests AND provide greener fuel so which one is it?
So a greener planet and safer place for our kids kids kids kids kids will only happen when Somebody in serious power actually has the balls to stand up and prevent the further development of an internal combustion engine which runs solely on petrol/diesel instead of intoducing CRAP hybrids to appease the politicians. Which will inevitably p1ss a lot of people off. Otherwise we will continuously go round and round in ever decreasing circles arguin the toss over what is or isn't right on this planet, when quite honestly I don't really give a damn. WE are a significantly tiny nation compared to those who don't give a flyin f*ck ie China/Usa/Russia. And I for one don't care for the shi-ite that gets drilled into this nation and the fact that we over pay heavy taxes which are supposed to help this when our total input to the problem of easing carbon emmisions amounts to something like 2% worldwide and the others don't.
Oh and recycling is a bloody farce too. As I've mentioned on here before. Up here in nose bleed territory (southern shandy drinkin girls blouses ) It costs me a fortune to recycle that which is easily and readily recyclable Garden Green Waste £80/t yet I can bring all manner of **** which will end up in landfil and it costs £10/ton. Wheres the logic in that? ITS DOWN TO TAXES AND MAKIN MONEY THATS IT, NOBODY REALLY CARES TO DO SOMETHING DRASTIC ENOUGH TO MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE AND THATS THE WAY IT WILL STAY.

Liz water takes over 70% of our world, if the Oceans are our Lungs. How can anyone prove that Co2 levels have increased???
Iceburgs melting?? Doesn't frozen water expand also the ice is above the sea, so it's weight is keeping the water levels up. If the ice melts then surely the water around the globe would decrease?

Glad to see that my comments went down a treat....was starting to think i'd lost my touch, and that u lot had made me soft!

Oh and I believe i stated what my degree was in...
and rather than "fact or fiction" i think the statement here is: social construct because there is no such thing as fact, same as there is no such thing as X causes Y (not even with smoking causes cancer)
Now, before u draw the knife, let me explain, and think about this carefully, because someone with a PhD in Biology told me this one;

Even with "smoking causes cancer" there is always going to be hidden factor Z that makes it appear to lead X to cause Y, and because its a HIDDEN factor, we may NEVER know what that hidden factor is, never mind WHY it leads X to cause Y....
and as for FACT, and specifically Scientific FACT, there is no such thing, because we dont know everything, and we are still learning, SO: therefore, we cant claim ONE thing leads to ANOTHER....
NOW, before anyone sees this as a way to critique my argument, as some sort of weakness, it is BECAUSE of this VERY ARGUMENT that we CANNOT say we are the cause of global warming because we produce CO2, but we KNOW we arent, because global warming goes in cycles (Just ask David Bellamy, because this is HIS argument) and there have been periods in history (Ice from Greenland can prove this) PRIOR to industrialisation when CO2 levels increased NATURALLY, and YES, to the SAME ammount as now And in the SAME WAY DECREASED over time.

rugby-french_25.jpg 27 Jun 2007 by Yetanotherdave Last edited 27 Jun 2007

I'm saying the 70% of the world is covered by H2O, and granted this would include a loads of Oceanic plant life as you put it our lungs. In addition to these's lungs there is another 20% of the globe with organic matter i.e Plants, grass and trees all of which are designed to absorb Co2 and give out Oxygen.
So this world would be a pretty lame world if 90% of the carbon eaters i.e plant life, couldn't control the Co2 problems.
It's all a farce
Just my theory

Tshirt.jpg 27 Jun 2007 by lizoconnor

But thats clearly what is going on; the plant life in the ocean is absorbing the CO2 that is man made, hence the CO2 levels DECREASING. They are NOT increasing at all. Studies have proven this, but there is big business to be made in the great global warming scam, and the data is being cooked by the governments to get what they want out of it.
That is WHY David Bellamy says its all rubbish. Even a top bloke in Greenpeace said it was Bo****ks.

"Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah --from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities --and also the vegetation in the land." Genesis 19:24, 25 NIV)

as i always seem to have to do for all you educated folk that lack in common sense, here is my spin.
the world is on a downward spiral, how long?? i dunno. should we help it along??
can we help to slow down the trend??
speed it up??
look to yourselves for the answer, if it isn't obvious, the answer is no.
do we have a moral obligation to look after it??
is the fact that we continue to reap the lungs of the earth, (rainforests), detrimental environmentally, and morally?
do the species who survive in that space have a right to live??
do my kids have a right to a future full of the wonders of the world??
do we have a right to exploit mother nature, and the poorer, third world nations?? you know, kids in sweat boxes, the taking of other nations minerals and resources for two bob compensation.
do we have a right to ABUSE the energy sources we have??
is it ok to produce resources in poorer countries, because the safety standards in the developed nations make it an additional cost to look after the earth, and the kids who are so poor that's the only place they can afford to live??
look at the endangered species list.
the BALANCE OF NATURE is getting wrecked, by us, not nature.
BALANCE is the key. ie, 4x4's as big as trucks, electric can openers, items of convenience, not necessity.
don't try to tell me that abuse of resources, and nature isn't helping this earth to ruin.
you clowns

I know deforestation is bad but it is being dealt with by regeneration and renewable sources, Fuels they will soon have an alternative to oil fuelled engines, sweat shops, conditions, water and food in 3rd world countries, take out the manipulating theiving gits in charge and they will sort themselves.

And scientist NO LONGER believe the rainforest are the lungs of the world, so your in the minority if you still believe that one....FYI, both sides of the debate agree on this ONE issue.
What we do doesnt make a blind bit of difference, because people COULDNT do anything about it on the previous occasions and it still happened and then it still went back to normal.

I have to ask tho, since climate change is holding back the ICE AGE we are OVERDUE, which of the two do you prefer???

Somebody mentioned Bumble Bees. 6 species have become extinct in the last 10 years. Who's fault is that? No bumble bees, no cross-pollonization = ? Bird life on the decline. When did you last hear a skylark in the U.K. ?
How does your tap water taste ? The last glass I had in the U.K. was disgusting. Tasted of chemicals? How is the congestion on the roads? Millions of cars standing still, engines running, not causing any problems are they? Lets pretend that they are not polluting the air that we breath. How would you feel about paying £ 20,000 for a Ford Fiesta? That is the price for one in Denmark. A tax of 180% is put on every car sold. Everybody rides bikes. Pesticides are banned and you can drink pure tap water. Thousands of Windmill turbines are in use to provide energy. There maybe only 5 million people in this small country but they do more for conservation, ecology and CO2 emmissions than any other European country. So you can sit there in the U.K. and pretend that all is well with the world but maybe you should take your heads out of your backsides and wake up. I am not a member of greenpeace but just a greenkeeper who hopes that his children may carry on enjoying fresh air, fresh water and when did you last see wild deer walking past your house?

theory, cut down tress, upset the balance. disprove that. regeneration? propogating 2yr old trees to replace those 1000's of yrs old?? make good sense?? imagine the wildlife stacking up in those little replacements.
the world is not a car. you can't just replace these natural wonders.
i have to assume you refer to god, liz. or are you referring to my father??
balance is a strong word. no balance, everything turns upside down.
i am not putting down educated people. i'm educated myself, and i happen to believe in learning from, personal or otherwise, experience

How about the great ad for Sainsburys. "We want to help save the planet so we are going to give away toilet roll today, free!" It comes from a sustainable source so we wont be using any more rain forests!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any fool knows that toilet roll is made from coppiced eucalyptus and grows faster than it is used and has been for years.

Hey rooter have you thought of living in a wattle and daube shack with recycles goose grease candles as your energy source? Don't think the old PC will work under those conditions somehow!

In the paper today. One scientist from the Uni. of East Anglia stating the floods in the north of England were caused by global warming. Second scientist states that is a load of rubbish, these cycles happen regularily and have since records began. What possible chance of us mere mortals being able to make a judged decision when the , so called experts, cannot even agree?

Another small point to make, plants DO take up CO2 when growing and when the trees have leaves on them, however when thay die and decompose al the CO2 they absorbed is released back into whence it came from. The atmosphere. It is called the carbon cycle. So when you cut the grass the resulting clippings decompose and give off, yes you've guessed it, CO2!

Chris

untitled 27 Jun 2007 by Barry Pace

Chris (how are ya) look at the floods we had down here few years ago, Chichester, cos they built on a flood plain, put too small a pipe in an badly managed water levels and controls and Uckfield and Lewes, again poor running of controls and water levels kept high to keep conservationist happy along with poor waterway maintenance.... oh and yes it rained,.. a lot... in a short period of time... on one place.... so we didnt used to get rain then...

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

Heres the comparison btw:
Denmark-
Population: 5.4 million
Area: 43098 sq km ( 16640 sq miles)

UK-
Population: 59 million
Area: 244110 sq km

So: obviously its a bit easier for the Danes to ride bikes and feel good about themselves.....

Remember (those of you who were alive then; thankfully im 23, so i wasnt!) during the war, when the government told everyone to do X and it would help the war effort??
It almost never did just made people FEEL better, because they FELT like they were helping. Thats not the same.

I have decided that it should be made a rule that all scientist should state what budgets they are trying to secure when making press statements so we know when the ones wanting thousands of pounds of our money to go jaunting around the world and getting their name in the papers might just have a little reason for statements such as that.
It rained, the existing streams, rivers and system because of lack of planning and management could not cope and it flooded................ end of..

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

27 Jun 2007 by chrismitchell

Am good Barry. Yep, Uckfields a prime example of bad management. Let's build an industrial estate next to a river at the lowest point for miles and cover all the surrounding land with concrete. Oh dear it floods, damn, should have seen that one coming!

Chris

You will never see a statue in honour of a committee.

Tshirt.jpg 27 Jun 2007 by lizoconnor

For the record: I am not in favour of deforestation.
Surely those amongst us who are literate can work out what i have said. At no point did i tell anyone to grab their husky and head for Brazil. The point I made, was that it is the oceans that soak up excess CO2 not the rainforests.

I am well aware of the Carbon cycle and night time photosynthesis, I dont think at any point I have disputed this, but since there is more plant life in the oceans than anywhere else (most of the planet is water after all) more photosynthetic activity is being carried out in the oceans than anywhere else on the planet.

Chris, its so much more than that though, because above (in terms of flow) all the ditches, streams and dykes (lewes) and river complexes are so badly managed now there was no holding capacity for water, yes the concrete certainly did not help but it was how quick the water got there that caused the problems at all 3 IMO

well, as to decmposition. if mother nature is left to it's own resources, trees will regenerate regularly, so there is always absorption of co2. lucky when we cut our grass, that we leave some there to carry out this cycle.

Rooter - the balance of nature is being wrecked by us ?
Is it though ?
Or are we only assisting in the change ? Or is that change inevitable what ever we do or don't do. ?
Should we attempt to interfere further - given mankind's natural ability of managing to make things worse ?
Is mankind really so arrogant that it thinks it has power of mother nature ? seems like your saying that it is and it has.

There is a balance in nature and that balance includes climate change and ice ages. It's happened in the past and it will happen again in the future.

Do you really believe all the political BS so much that you think mankind can control natures cycles.
Get real you clown.

oh Liz, we're not necessarily overdue another ice age. Whilst predominately the interglacial periods last around 10->11,000 years that's not always the case - there have been occasions where the interglacial's have last 15->30,000 years.

Guy's these are the Lyrics we are ALL looking for, it's from a really good friend of mine, and like the Scientists i believe his every word!!!!

There's a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be much
Brighter than tomorrow.
And if you really try
You'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel
There's no hurt or sorrow.
There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space, make a better place.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

If you want to know why
There's a love that cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares for joyful giving.
If we try we shall see
In this bliss we cannot feel
Fear or dread
We stop existing and start living
Then it feels that always
Love's enough for us growing
Make a better world, make a better world.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race.
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

Bridge:
And the dream we would conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify it's soul
Though it's plain to see, this world is heavenly
Be God's glow.

We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel
You are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we'll cry happy tears
See the nations turn
Their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space to make a better place.

Chorus:
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

Refrain (2x)

There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.
There are people dying if you care enough for the living
Make a better place for you and for me.

You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Make a better place
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children
You and for me / Heal the world we live in
You and for me / Save it for our children

insults are what makes debate more interesting :)
and when someone brings up a subject like this then there's bound to be a few insults flying around - anyone who takes them personally is a fool :D

I thought we were talking about climate change / global warming - that's what I was referring to with regards to 'mankind believing it has power over mother nature'.

Abuse of resources is a different subject - one that I happen to mostly agree with you on. I just don't agree that it is the cause of the climate change.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

27 Jun 2007 by Pitchcare Peter

Thank you Barry. Insults have no place on this website.

This week's floods in Yorkshire would suggest that climate change is going on .... until you read that these are the "worse floods since 1869" which suggests that nothing is new!!

Very little of our recent weather is 'new' as pretty much every time something unusual happens it is followed by "the worst since ...." of "the hottest since ..." and so on.

I believe we all have a duty to protect our planet in which ever way we see fit. Whether that is recycling waste, walking or cycling instead of using the car or putting up bumblebee nest boxes etc. is down to the individual.

I am more of the view that we are in a cycle of weather rather than human effected change but, even then, it is hard to believe that by plundering our planet's resources we are not having, or will have, some detrimental effect.

27 Jun 2007 by chrismitchell

Rooter, I am saying man is being very arrogant if he thinks he is oley respobible for climate change any difference the people of Great Britain are making is so minute to be imesureable.

Our existance on this planet is so insignificant that one large volcanic action (of which we are due!) will have far more effect on the environment and weather than 1000 years of mankind and there are some quarters of the scientific world that actually put recent changes down to the after effects of recent eruptions around the world.
(just another lil stick for the dogs to chase lol)

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

27 Jun 2007 by jlawrence

Chris, I think rooter is saying that as well. We probably ain't helping matters, but and it's a big BUT. If what we're doing is only accelerating (to some degree or other) what is happening anyway should we attempt to alter it.
The politicians will have us believe that we are the cause of the climate change and that we have the power to arrest or even reverse said change. I maintain that we're not the cause, nor should we even attempt to reverse it - if we even could.
Yes, we should look after the planet and not make matters worse by plundering the limited resources that we have. But we shouldn't be so arrogant as to believe that we can arrest (or reverse) mother natures cycles.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Rooter,It is not possible to have an argument t without at least one person involved being contrary otherwise it would just be agreement!
Nothing is being added to the planet or for that matter taken away, it has always been here. Even the fossil fuels were once apon a time living plants upon the surface, burning merely returns them from whence they came in the first place, the atmosphere.

A good point made by Ken earlier, rainfall does absorb CO2 as it falls and adds it to the ground. As rain absorbs CO2 it become weak carbonic acid which causes the erosion you see on rocks.

Seriously, now from me thats a first, I really believe that the de-forestation of the rain forest's are the ecological issue that are worth battling against. The reason they are being destroyed is to produce farmland, yet western countries have more food than they can eat. This is where the balance is wrong and many species will suffer for it.
Consider the fact that there will be species, wonderful species, that will never be known by man - yet we will be the cause of their extinction.

"Nobody's mention methane from cows yet! "

And what about all that meathane from cows then! enough to run a power station or two i'd say and all for a mcdonalds beefburger that's generally only half eaten and thrown on the pavement for some one in a sweeper, cherning out CO2 from the power unit to clear up and then when it's collected, transported to a landfill site were (I don't know if you have seen them) they sink ventilation pipes to vent of the methane caused by all the rotting rubbish.

I was astonished a couple of weeks ago when sitting in the local supermarket carpark in my car and waiting for my better half to put the trolley back in the trolley bay, opposite a mother changing the nappy on her youngling. no sooner had she finished the nappy was thrown under the car (Out of sight out of mind I suppose). and then jump in her car and drove off. Nice job for someone to pick that up! But then I can tell you that It isn't the only time I have noticed disposable nappy's just thrown away and even had to pick them up myself. YUK!

Cars and lorries - how many times have you heard on the radio that the M25 is gridlocked and this often isn't isolated. if you can imagine all the cars on just the M25 for the moment most sections have all four lanes with a full volume of traffic with just a car or two break between the next car and for the miles and miles that will take you around the whole system Clockwise and Anti clockwise _ How much fuel is in just those cars alone. now imagine the same on the M1 and then the M5, 3, 62, 20 if you could gather together all that fuel I think you can start to imagine how much we burn. It would be interesting to find out what the figure is of how much petrol, diesel is dispensed through the pump nation wide on a daily or weekly basis. Now of course we are just talking about Britain, Add America, Canada, China, France etc. etc. Mind boggling isn't it

you can buy carbon neutral fuel for 83p per litre, thats with tax. if people want to fill their car with cooking oil and not pay their taxes, they shouldn't be surprised if they get caught. i don't like the amount of tax i pay on fuel, but if i should be caught for evading the tax i should accept the punishment, and probably cry just a little as they crushed my bimmer..

There are a few to many users of this site have not had much to do today, other than to burn useful energy by contributing.
If it is all our fault, why did'nt somebody think of that when the ice started melting, and qiuckly stop it. We would'nt be in this mess now, and there would'nt be another excuse to have to pay more tax.
Trust me, if Governments manage to turn this around, they will then want to tax us/ children of us for the clean air they breath. Bring on the sunshine, had more than enough rain now.

So! When they have this save the planet concert in London this year, are all our self riteous rock stars going to walk there? No, they will fly halfway around the planet and then travel in a fluel guzzling limo to give us a lecture on not doing what they are. The thousands of people attending will also be as guilty by driving or using trains and buses. Where is the sense in that?

I have decided overnight that it should not be called Climate Change, the current phase we are in should now be called Climate Instability.

nzf.jpg 28 Jun 2007 by kiwiturfie

I'll mention the methane from the cows....guess what our government tried to do a few months ago....

"NZ farmers reject methane tax -

New Zealand farmers have reacted angrily to a planned tax on the methane emissions of their sheep and cattle.

The New Zealand Government has announced that from next year, farmers will be charged 60 cents per cow and eight cents per sheep, to offset the cost of emissions to the environment.

The country produces fairly low levels of methane, but half of the total comes from livestock, and the fact that they're mostly fed on grass rather than grain makes for more methane."

Now I live the suburbs in the east of Auckland City and when I drive over the hill on the 3rd fairway and look south towards the rural areas all you see is a light mist. Look NW towards the city and you see a grey-brown murky fog.

Global warming is not the fault of livestock.....long may the cows fart for free!

28 Jun 2007 by chrismitchell

Yes Barry, I have read that thread before it makes perfect sense to me.
As for New Zealand trying to tax methane emissions, what were they going to do to help the enviroment with money raised? It's a bit like our goverment over here, green tax on flights! The plane is still going to fly, it will just cost the passenger more. Still they could always use the money to invade a foreign country that has vast stocks of oil..................Oh dear they already have, they will have to raise some money to fund it mmmmmmmmmmmmm better think up a new tax that the gullable will except, I know, global warming that should work.

Chris

I have only just got my home internet connection back after 2 weeks and have to say that a thread with 223 responses is some effort, my own opinion is as many of you have said, that global warming is a lot of scare mongering so the powers that be can tax us for it.

I wonder if some 15,000 years ago or whenever the last ice age kicked in, the inhabitants of planet Earth were sat looking out of their caves and saying "I told you if you kept cutting down trees and building fires there'd be trouble.

rugby-french_25.jpg 9 Jul 2007 by Yetanotherdave

Sorry guy's i had to bring this back up.
I was watching my annual news update when i saw that Boeing have brought out a new improved plane, with less feul consumption. (Great i thought, this would suit all you weirdo's who believe in Global Warming!!) Then Cue this Ucking Fidiot, who deciedes to suggest that we should pay tax on our flights. (what an ****, this government sucks, tax to save global warming!!!)
These people should be taxed for talking *****!!! Instead of fuel tax why not create a Talking ***** tax.
This country would be the wealthiest country in Europe!!

10 Jul 2007 by jlawrence

ivor - I agree. Adding extra tax to things won't change anything at all - it just simply makes it more expensive to fly somewhere. Big wow, people will still fly and I have zero faith that any government will put the taxes collected into anything useful.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

10 Jul 2007 by chrismitchell

It gets even better when you see that some councils are doubling the cost of a parking space outside your house if you drive a 4x4! So what do you do? Just drive around looking for a cheaper place to park? That should help global warming alright! Before long there will be a tax on the compost heap as it emits CO2!

Chris

You will never see a statue in honour of a committee.

10 Jul 2007 by rooter

well everyone,
global warming is real, as is climate change.
we are merely speeding it up.
if you don't like the taxes, take it up with your local member, but, don't blame global warming for your extra tax.
we are to blame for that.

10 Jul 2007 by chrismitchell

Don't think so rooter. Man and his machines are but a mere drop in the ocean in terms of the planet Earth. You need to look at the Sun and the oceans for your answer.

Chris

You will never see a statue in honour of a committee.

10 Jul 2007 by rooter

i know this chris,
but do you think, for example, the amount of toxins we put into our earth, and the water system, helps?
we put toxins into our body, ie alcohol, nicotine, etc. it doesn't do us any good, does it?
man is not solely to blame for gw, or climate change, but we don't help it. we do affect it though.

10 Jul 2007 by chrismitchell

We add nothing to the Earth and we take nothing away. We are just redistributing what is here anyway. The fossil fuels are stored up carbon taken from the atmosphere in the first place. All we are doing is putting them back from whence they came.

Chris

You will never see a statue in honour of a committee.

10 Jul 2007 by Grassman2011

Extra income tax never seems to correct anything anyway.

10 Jul 2007 by rooter

%$ck the tax argument.
would you eat a fish caught in a river by an industrial estate??
everything has its place...we ar redistributing the *rap

10 Jul 2007 by Grassman2011

I get out now, but more often than not, i would not know where my fish came from, but sure as eggs are eggs, i would redistribute it.
By By.

Perry 1 10 Jul 2007 by Steve63

You cannot destroy energy, only change its form. Everything that we use, burn, eat and destroy is reformed in a different format.
Mount Helena in one day put out more crap into the atmosphere than gosh knows how many fossil burning planes and there are eruptions happening around the ring of fire every minute of the day.
I have said it before, we are but an infestation, a parasite on the planet Earth, and when we have have nuked our asses off the world, it will be so much a better place.
We are just so goddamn arrogant to assume that our ****** exsistance means a damn thing in the grand scheme of things.
If the planets existance was a 24 hour clock mankind would represent a mere 4 seconds, the shittiest 4 seconds of its 4.5 Billion years.

Whatever did happen to acid rain? It was supposed to be caused by fossil fuels and we are using more now than ever! I suspect the goverment want us to go nuclear so we are self sufficient and what better way than to convince all the doubters that it is fossil fuel causing global warming.

And as for rock stars telling us not to do what they do all the time. As Rob says hypocrisy is alive and well!

As for the recent concerts dubbed "Live Earth", and the pop stars jetting all over the place, I interpret it this way.
As I am a gambler, I was once told that you have to speculate to accumulate.
ie, Be prepared to lose a little to gain alot.
That's what has happened here. I'm not sure about the power sources at the different venues etc, but I did see they were renewable sources.
What these gigs were aiming for was to raise awareness, as do all the documentaries etc we see on tv, articles in papers, etc.
I don't think it's all crap, I certainly don't want to eat chemically infected fish, or for my kids to be born with two heads. I do my bit, at home and in the job. I also have to use alot of energy through electricity, use alot of water, etc. Do I feel good about it? Not really. All I try to refrain from is wasting energy, being over zealous with chemical treatments and be clever with the resources, natural and otherwise, that I use.
As for nukes, they live deep in the ground. We bring them out, contort them, so, where do we put the waste??
Not in my backyard, but in whose?? Ask the people in Hiroshima, Chernobyl, and the aboriginals in Central Australia, back in the 50's and 60's.
There's a place in Kakadu National Park, in Northern Australia, abundant in the yellowcake, (uranium). 100,000's of years ago, the aboriginals passed on through the elders that these mountains should never be disturbed, in fear of a Vicious Beast being unleashed. So what does the bloody Liberal Government want to do to this Natural Wonder of the World??
You guessed it. Mine the *astard.
Now we await the vicious beast.

20 Jul 2007 by Henk Vlug

I did not read all messages because of my high season but I may add that the world population is 3 times too high and that causes trouble with the health of our planet. Let us produce less children and ask our economists how to tackle the lesser growth of economy and the temporarily old age group problems which will occur after uneven distribution of ages.

sequoia logo.jpg 20 Jul 2007 by mickjm

If the worlds population is 3 x too high where are the figures laid down which clarify that? When Bobby boy came down off mount Etna with the 10 commandments was there a p.s. saying the Earths population should be X billion? I doubt it.
Anyway, chop off knobs, plug up women, shoot old biddies and the worlds fixed. HOW DID WE MISS THAT?

I have liz when the bulbs first came on to the market you may recalll that they used to cost around the £15.00 mark and the they dropped to around £8.00 when that happened I made a concious decision to change over to the more energy efficient light bulbs Not all at once I might add but every time I went shopping I bought one. Before long my whole house was fitted with them. I found it very noticable that my electricity bill were lower by upto £20 a quarter cheeper and I'm still using the same bulbs 10 years on. Good investment I'd say so. You need to try it before you knock it. Oh and if your living in a bedsit you probably won't notice it so much but in a house most likely.

Wozelbeak, so what' was that guy's handicap??? Suppose it's the lack of a body now Hey!!

23 Jul 2007 by jlawrence

Mal - I agree. Without any doubt if you change to the fluorescent type lights you should see a lower electricity bill. Forgetting that I need to change my whole automation system I wish they'd design the low energy bulbs so that they actually fitted in the lights without hanging out of the end of the shades - ie make the damn things the same physical size as a 'normal' bulb.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Tshirt.jpg 23 Jul 2007 by lizoconnor

Mal- ive bought these bulbs, and the only thing i noticed is that they blew after the same length of time that the tescos value ones did. I never noticed any change in my electricity consumption. Im on a key meter not a bill, so maybe there would be a difference if i was on a bill, but since im not, im not paying extra for the bulbs

Im back baby!

Avatar: Fruit Bat 23 Jul 2007 by Mal

Fair enough Liz (Whatever Lights your candle. By all means do as you find.) The ones I bought probably more expensive at the time and are the Philips brand and in my case found to be reliably good. I bought tescos brand ones before now for my shed and undercroft not thinking they warrant the more expesive type but guess what. I don't think any of them lasted beyond 4 to 6 months. so I gave in and and treated the shed to one as well as the undercroft.

How farcical................ caught end of a report the weekend obviously planned weeks ago, on the Norfolk Broads where 'concerned' reporter was asking a 'Climate Change Advisor' on how the broads would be effected by the continual wet Winters and dry Summers and how would this effect the wildlife and flora etc just 5 seconds after discussing with someone the effects of the floods...........all floating about on a boat......... oh how I laughed..... So are they saying that this years floods are just one offs and that the previous 2 years of dry are what we have got forever ..........until the next freaky flood lol
The weather has since the first dawn been freaky and will still be freaky until the day the sun dies........................................

One of my members has voiced concern over a few bits of ragwort that has popped up in the deep rough. He feels that we should remove them. I had to point out that in this time of global warming and climate change that in fact ragwort was very enviromentaly friendly. You see, when ragwort dries out it becomes palatable to horses. If they eat enough of it they die. Not good for the horse but great for the enviroment. No more massive queues of slow moving traffic stuck behind a gas guzzling horse box. Reduced methane emissions from horses bottoms but also the ragwort was absorbing CO2 while it grew. So the answer is stop interferring with nature it will sort itself out!

It also could be sourced localy thus reducing the juggernaughts on the road shifting meat around the country. No trucks taking them to the slaughter house because they are already dead It's all starting to come together now. Ragwort should be made our national emblem!!

In the villagewhere I live, the local council have announced they wish to make it a plastic bag free zone. So my first question was, why? Arhh, they said, they are made from oil and take hundreds of years to break down. But think about it said I. If they take hundreds of years to break down surely they are good for the enviroment. All that carbon locked up and not in the atmosphere as apposed to trees that live a relatively short life and return the C02 that they have absorbed straight back when they drop their leaves! They really don't think it through do they?

and what about the vast quantity of plastic bags that are needlessly buried in landfill due to the trend of dog owners made to collect and bury their pooches poo , surely their are situations where the potentially rich plant nutrient poo shouldn,t need to be collected and put into smelly fly ridden boxes then collected by an unnecessary vehicle going around (more emissions) then buried in landfill for hundreds of years , another government idea that was never really thought through..what say you Gorbi ?

Its got to be purrrfect

22 Aug 2007 by chrismitchell

Nice one Rob! We have a large number of dog walkers across the courses every morning and they collect up the poo and put it into plastic bags then throw them in the rough!!!! Of course now the poo does not break down until some poor sod cutting the rough gets the bag splattered all over him. In one gorse bush we removed last year there were ove 30 plastic bags full of s***t!! We have had to put notices up telling people not to put their dog poo into our litter bins as it is a health and safety risk. Shame ragwort is not poisonous to dogs!!
