Message Board - Bowls: graden clear up
11 Sep 2007 by britboy
can anyone who has used a graden tell me what has been the best way to clear up the debris. As the work is on bowling greens obviously ditches surround the green so i was thinking of using a back pack blower to blow into a tarpaulin or would an etesia rotary mower have enougth vacuum to pick up.I will be going down to a depth of 8-10 mm so dont know how much rubbish to expect. All help appreciated

Expect lots and lots of debris.
I went a bit deeper than you (around 30mm) and took out around 25 Cu m of stuff. For picking up I used an old 36" mower. I've heard of people using blowers successfully so you should be OK with that, I doubt a rotary will have enough uplift to pick it up.
You'll be amazed at the amount of stuff that comes out.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I know some football grounds use rotary mowers after games and operations to "clear up" quite time consuming though with a full size pitch..,quick lets invent something...get a patent running
Its got to be purrrfect

Quite right the debris from the Graden will be immense.
I've used a combination of my Dennis mower with the brush attachmentto pick up and then blown the rest away with a back pack blower.
It seems to work well on both cricket squares and bowls greens.

The Snow Brushes based on a strimmer that RK Kensetts sometimes sell on with the machine will clear debris quicker than anything I have seen and its just a job of picking up the rows.
Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

I have just done my cricket square with the graden, and cleaned it off with my sisis rotorake fitted with the brush attachment. It made a lovely clean job, just ready for seeding tomorrow.

I have used the graden on our greens twice a year for the past five years and tried all sorts of methods to remove the debris. The quickest and cleanest way I have found is to use a paddle sweeper on a sthil combi system. Good luck.

We've just finished end of season renovations on our cricket pitch and also used the Sisis auto-rotorake with brush attachment to clean up the surface. We have previously used a rotary mower but we found you need to used one that cuts fairly low e.g. 5mm to be effective. Saying that the Sisis proved to be much more effective and I would recommend using it.

The power broom shown here at a Graden demo seemed to do the trick!

Just graden scarified a dozen bowling greens 2 passes to about 25mm depth. Used a SQRL sweeper from Turfmech to pick up debris. Excellent piece of kit 600mm wide far superior than sisis autorotorake with brush attachment

I try to do it on a windy day , and work with the prevailing wind to blow it all to one end , I also use a backpack blower and then throw it in the tractor trailer .
