Message Board - Cricket: Plymouth CC in legal battle.

Hi all,
I know a few of you visited me at various times whilst I was at Plymouth so I thought some may be interested in this:
Plymouth legal battle.
From what I'm told it could be an interesting court case with the outcome far from certain on either side.

Seems a shame to me that it has come to this after the club finally got promotion back to the Premier in their 150th year (last season).

The calendar might look good adorning your shed wall so feel free to buy one and help the cause.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

got it, its ok my other half is from plymouth and she as family not far from there.

Just a couple of questions for you
i take it the grounds owners are the local council.
if so how long was their lease for.

Check out their web site www.arnoldfc.com
there is a news item on there about there and the cricket clubs eviction

It's not quite as straight forward as the council owning the ground.
I can't go into too much details not least because I'm not longer at the club and may not know everything that is currently happening, and obviously I don't want to screw up the court case (not everything is in the public domain yet).
The council sold the lease, but to the best of my knowledge the current owners are effectively challenging whether the club has any kind of lease. They haven't to the best of my knowledge actually put forward any development plans.
I think the nub of it is:
The club say they have a lease, the landlords say they haven't.
And from a few things that have happened along the way there isn't any center ground to sort this out without it going to court.

Hi Jon, Stacksteads C C playing in the Ribblesdale League Lancs/yorks are have problems over their lease.
The ground was owned by the local Methodist Church and leased to the club . It has recently been bought along with the church by a property developer. Initial disputes lead to him bringing a rotovater onto the square, Police intervention stopped the destruction of the square, mid season. He's now being thwarted by a colony of protected bats in the church, and the club are trying to get village green status. It's a poor situation considering the club have played there for over 100 years.

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother

as an ex bowler it pains me to say this, buts lets hope those bats dont declare or retire hurt. BAT ON BAT ON

Fortunately the landlords are heavily involved with sport in the city - just not cricket :(. So they are very unlikely to do anything that would actually damage the surface - it's simply a business deal for them.

I've been asked to pass on Plymouth's thanks for everything so far.
They'd received over 750 entires on the petition and sold quite a few calendars.

Just an up date.

Plymouth CC have been amazed at the response they've received.
Over 3000 people have signed the various petitions (1600+ online alone).
Lots of calendars have been sold and they're on target for selling over 4K's worth of them.
Memorabilia has been received from many clubs (including county level) ranging from signed scoresheets to cricket bats. One club has even offered to host a pre-season friendly (bbq, raffle etc) with all bar profits going to the appeal.
Letters of support have been received from alsorts of people including the likes of Michael foot who sent a personal letter of support to the local paper.

What has surprised the guys are the number of clubs that have contacted them to say that their club is (or has recently been) in a similar position. If this is happening across the country (in all sports) then I'm not surprised that as a nation we're turning into fat lazy layabouts.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Surprisingly yes.

I say surprisingly cos I know them all - from what I hear it was one of the lasses who came up with the idea for the calendar. The calendar is made of members of the ladies team along with a few committee members as well.

Looking at the preview shot, I think it is clear to see which one is the Committee Member....!
