Message Board - Other Sports: shockwave/roto-knife combi versus soil reliever
25 Jan 2008 by britboy
we are thinking of purchasing the shockwave/roto-knife package for maint on our rugby pitches and wud like to compare this against the soil reliever type aeration method .Anyone used these ,please give any comments which has been the best for you.We are looking at the 1.55 m model so also advice on the minimum tractor hp to cope with this kit would be good.We are looking at benye/foton tractors for this. Any views?

Don,t think either of these tractors will last very long with either of the machines. Pitchcare did a test last year on all tractors, you will be able to find it somewhere on this site. The one which came out top will handle both machines and still have a good resale value when you have finished with it.

Won' leven lift any of the machines you mention , never mind work them.
Look for a tractor which is strong , operator friendly and which has a resale value.

We used a Blec Groundbreaker New Holland 2120 combination when we done our Rugby fields. solid old fashioned tractor, with no electronics on them, and not much to go wrong on them. You can pick them up reasonably cheap too

I think Paul above has just given the answer to which tractor if you havenot worked it out it is New Holland

Caravan, Just in case you think I'm name dropping, stating I use a Ford/New Holland 2120 tractor, I also operate a John Deere 4700 tractor with LGP Galaxy tyres as well. Not everybody can afford a more modern up to date tractor as the 4700, but stating, as an example which tractor can operate a Blec groundbreaker/ Imants Shockwave machine. Having operated, and maintained a vast range of tractors during my career, I feel this tractor (2120) is robust, powerful, and simple enough to do a good job, without sometimes, the problematic electronic packages on a more modern machines.
