nifty

Seek out a good mower man in your area and let him:

a) Get your mower going and

b) Teach you the five steps to mower resuscitation!

I think they are; spark plug, oil, fuel, fuel filter and hammer.

Something like that.

Before Zoid posted I was thinking through the best way to explain all the things which you could check for.
Fortunately I think I have stopped myself in time.

Meaning no disrespect Nifty but I feel Zoid is correct.

If you really don't know anything about machinery then please get a hold of someone qualified 'cos mowers can be lethal if untrained fingers are set loose on them.

Lose some fingers and then you'll be looking for a job as a shorthand typist!

I know no boundaries.

Stood since October says it all. Has it been serviced? This might be a lesson for many.
A mower will never let you down at a good time, just like your car, it will only ever break down just when you want to use it. Strange that isnt it.

Nifty, I know for a fact that for the Mag engine it should be started at least monthly during the winter and run to temperature - this circulates the oil and keeps the electrics in order. If this is not done service or no service the spark has a tendancy to fail and the electrics will need cleaning up and resetting. This doesnt take long but needs a mechanic or at least somebody mechanically minded to do as the flywheel has to be removed - seeing as you appear to be neither another service is probably in order but at least the cutting parts wont need to be done again. It sounds like a good idea to service before winter, but with the Matador I would clean it up and winterise it and then have it serviced around beginning of feb.

I realise that your problem is with the electrics, but if the machine has been lying since last October, I would be in favour of changing the fuel as a matter of course.

I know no boundaries.

Most likely, as others have said, your points will need cleaning after a winterful of dampness has had an effect.

Just before that, - try disconnecting the On/Off switch to eliminate a short-circuit in that department.

If you don't understand what I just wrote re-read Zoids first posting...

Good advice from Mario re: Fuel, also.

take of air filter and use can of easy start . and change plugs etc

Wit all due respect Martyn - if you re-read the original post you will note that the root of the mower's problem is a lack of spark.

Nifty, by trialling the spark plug on another machine, has eliminated that item as being faulty.

Alas, as much as it would please him, an injection of Easy Start isn't going to solve this particular problem.

I know no boundaries.

have you made sure that its not the suppresser cap thats faulty by taking it off + trying for a spark at the bare ht lead?
glenn .. i cant quite remember the mag ignition setup but sometimes theres a removable plate on the flywheel you can get through to give the points a rub, worth a try .. anyway removing the flywheel is no big deal . undo the crank nut then screw it back on flush with the threads get a big screwdriver behind flywheel +lever it towards the crank nut .. all you need then is to give the nut a good clout but make sure you hit it squarely to avoid damaging threads .. ive worked on mowers for 37 years removed hundreds of flywheels this way .. no mower shop in the country has a puller for everyflywheel out there . regards glenn

Have you tried bump starting it in 3rd gear down a good hill? If that fails I'd definately get a 'mowerman' in. I'm pretty good with diy mechanics but when its obviously electrics its best left to someone who has been doin it a while, much like plastering walls really!

No Fork handles....Handles for forks!!
