Martyn, check out the article on rolling on the pitchcare home page. That should help you out. Spray your carbendazim when you see signs of worm activity.

It is far too wet to be rolling.

For every 2 hours pre-season, with progressive weight, when the table is receptive, it will save you 2 hours prep before a game - or so said my old school groundsman Peter Bromley at Shrewsbury. I never did understand why spending 2 hours saved you 2 hours.

Worm activity at the surface is supressed by the cold weather, it keeps them below. When the ground starts warming up and getting stickier your carbendazim will be more effective. This time last year we were having a micro-heatwave and it would have been just the time to let them have it - so much for local warming. If I were you I would wait a week or so.

Martyn,
Apply carbendizum this weekend while it is raining, very good time.
I do not see that hours of rolling are significant. It is the number of passes that count and at what wieght and speed. Take a look underneath and have a look at how solid the soil is.
As for being to wet, the moisture content of my square on Tuesday was 18 to 22%. Absolutely perfect for rolling.
Charles it may well be that it is to wet for you to roll. Remember that every site is different.
I have almost achieved all that i can now. Approx. 25 passes and most of my square has been relaid over the last three years.
Older, more mature squares may not need as much if they have been rolled in the most optimum conditions.

just taken the covers off and left about a foot high pile of ice on the outfield sqaure temp at 5 degrees 30% moister they will not be much rolling in oxford today.

I think Charles is in a similar area of the country as me and I can assure you it is very wet. I could do nothing over the weekend as there was standing water on the square.

Far too wet up here to contemplate even walking on the square. What with snow lying on Tuesday and rain today, I'll be lucky to get on at the start of next week.

Oh the joys!

I know no boundaries.

Like Bath says it is very dry here in Wiltshire about 5 miles from Bath's ground. It's so dry and hard am thinking of getting the hose out soon to soften the ground. Only joking Bath, so don't have a heart attack!

Ground temperature 11.7 degree's C at 1600 today.

Saltire.gif 27 Mar 2008 by mario

Is that a surface temperature Gordon or was the reading taken from depth?

I know no boundaries.

Martyn,
I think you should have got the carb down before you rolled. Chances are you've squashed the casts into nasty disks by now - unless you drag-matted or swished first.
Rolling conditions up here in North Lincs spot on - if only I could get the roller out of the store (new concrete ramp being built and the mixer got delayed!)

Ken,

Temp. measured with my probe bought from the pitchcare shop. Tip of probe will be about 75mm into the root zone.
Air temp. probably made 15 C this afternoon.

Gordon that is so unfair, you must have a micro-climate in Bath. Why aren't you soaking wet and cold, has all this poor weather just passed you by ?

The sun shone in Surrey this afternoon, and air temps got above 10C for a few hours, but I would guess the soil temp is still in the 5-8C range. Too cold in fact to apply my first spring feed. Moisture 30%+ and the outfield is flooded in several places.

The forecast for tomorrow is gale force winds and another half inch of rain !

Fortunately we don't start until 20th April and the first league game is 10th May, so no panic yet.

It must be the warm mineral spring water Charles, remember, Bath Spa. Or at least thats where the trains stop.

My pitch is bone dry here in Dublin at the minute. If the rain forecast this weekend doesn't materialise I'll be taking out the hose.

I took the Gator over to the other side of the ground this afternoon and the water was spraying up from the wheels. Field capacity reached me thinks?

Rain forecast all day tomorrow but an improving forecast from Sunday. So here hopes!

I know no boundaries.
