Price may play a part but, auto roller good. New Poweroll in my opinion better. Well built, very quiet and everything that goes with a new machine.
Finance may mean a 32 rd. Not the best, but used by many clubs.

I've used a Poweroll Club this season - can't fault it or the aftersales service - highly recommended

Nuts

what are the relative prices and ages.

i have the auto roller and find it superb.
poweroll, ive heard good things but have never used one.
Stothert n pitt... im sorry but i wouldnt touch it with a greasy barge pole...... they are old and parts are not easy to come by (gear boxes especially) most recons ive come across are converted to petrol, thus cost the earth to run

look at the auto roller... how old and how well maintained and will seller give a warranty. (dealer only)

poweroller there are good and bad things with some of these, the lesser models have low weight n ground pressure plus are petrol engines mounted on the rear deck, noisy to operate i would have thought plus expensive to run. remember all diesel rollers can be run on red diesel.....much cheaper. happy hunting

im now an ex groundsman but hey old habits die hard

Dave,

They have at least one model with a 3cylinder diesel Kubota engine and is very quiet.
Lack of size and wieght is usually overcome with more passes of the roller. Footprint per sq inch is usually very similar.
I have an auto roller with hydraulic convertion, much easier to use, but bloody noisy.
I have to say that i like the Poweroll, but i have not used one on a daily basis.

I use a power roller and I think that it is better than the auto roller that I used to use though it is a Power roll 25 which is steered using a games console type lever and I'm sure that it is not to everyones taste but once used to, is excellent. the seat swivels also so that you are always facing the direction you are travelling but I think these are features only with this model.

Dave think you are being a bit harsh on the stothert and pitt, I had one at my previous club, that hadn't been maintained for about 20 years, but each spring you went into the garage checked the oil swung the handle a couple of times and away she went, I have one as a spare at one of clubs now and this one lives outside all year round and yet with a couple of swings starts evrytime, it's usefull to start preseason rolling with, they are both Lister diesels, and ran for ever on a 5 litre can, they do lack weight but I ballasted it up with 8 bags of loam and she still ran perfectly and produced good wickets, if nut250's club hasn't much money then the lack of coplexity of an old S+R could be a good thing, we all know you break hydraulic machines at your peril. If they can't afford the Autoroll or Poweroll then a second hand Bomag type roller is a cheaper alternative, the above are good but damned expensive. As usual it all comes down to budget.

I've used our new Poweroll Club all season.
One slight problem at start, soon fixed (I think it was a US v Japanese spec issue with a bearing - 25mm is not same as 1").
Petrol engine is less economic than old Diesel machine, but still not a major cost compared to the mowers. Water ballast worked well - ran it at full weight from late April, drained it on Sunday. I don't find it noisy - it's quieter than all of our mowers.
It's very simple to use - just don't put the shed keys on the nice convenient flat section next to the drivers seat (two of us have locked all our keys in the store that way!). That flat section is great for putting a radio on so you can listen to TMS though.
Can't comment on long - term reliability yet. It will stuggle to beat our 1930s Aveling-Barford though.

I like our auto roller but as Bath says they are very noisy - using with out ear defenders or mp3 is almost intolerable.

The smaller poweroll models whilst lighter also have smaller width drums so presure per sq inch is almost the same. The main difference is that you would have to go up and down the track more often than you would with the bigger models - obviously.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
