3 Nov 2008 by Kip
There was a suggestion on a previous post that potassium may help control moss by encourage micro organisms which destroy the moss.
An truth in this??
Thanks

I can't saee any scientific based reason why this would be the case.
Of course the grass looks good. The sun is shining.

There is a product out there (can't remember the name) which suggests excess K will control moss. From memory (which is well rotted by Smirnoff) the potash was chloride based. Application rates would have put K levels through the roof before taking into account the amount of chlorides in the profile.

I think the post youre refering to was one of mine.
There is a product called MO Bacter which apparently gets rid of moss without the need for scarifying.
According to the suppliers trade gumph the high levels of K kill the moss then microbes within the product digest what is left over.

Hi Bob,
MO Bacter was the product I was thinking off. I take it back about the potash source being chloride (for now).
The suggested application rate equates to 100g/m2 of a 5-5-20 product. (50 bags a hectare).
NPK nutrient applied per hectare would then be 50kg of n, 50kg of P and 200K.
They suggest early spring or late autumn application. I know I would not put out 50kg of N in late autumn.

Hell of a price per bag if i remember rightly. Did'nt DJ Turfcare have something to do with it ?
I hope it is money better spent than on his linear aerator.

I just got the analysis and application rates from dj turfcare site

I believe that 'potassium' salts can be used to kill Algae. With regard to Potassium killing moss I am not so sure about that!
One thing is for sure, a healthy, balanced nutrition programme will encourage dense grass growth..this will prevent infestation of moss in the first place!
There's my two pennies worth..

Tried MO bacter on a couple of greens as a trial. Hopeless results. It was made best new product at last years BTME so I don't know on what basis. In defence though I think it has been developed for lawns.

Copious bottles of Smirnoff blue for all the judges usually does the trick for such prestigious awards. (2007 was obviously a good vintage – for potatoes)

Now now Mark. Know exactly what you mean though. Must come with a very silver toungue as well.
